Dhu l-Hijja

Dhū l-Qaʿda (Arabic: ذو القعدة) (or Dhi l-Qaʿda) is the 11th month in the Hijri lunar calendar. This month is one of the Haram Months[1](Muharram, Rajab, Dhu l-Qa'da, and Dhu l-Hijja are haram months) in which fighting is prohibited.[2] The month of Dhu l-Qa'da is also one of the months of Hajj (Shawwal, Dhu l-Qa'da and Dhu l-Hijja).[3]

Literally, Dhu l-Qa'da is derived from "Qu'ud" (Arabic: قعود) an Arabic noun which means sitting and used figuratively in the meaning of avoiding war and fight. Since Arabs avoided war during this month it was called Dhu l-Qa'da (the month which has sitting).[4]

Merits of the Month

Talking about the merits of the month, al-Sayyid b. Tawus writes, "The month of Dhu l-Qa'da is a very good time for praying, for resolving the hardships and troubles, and also for praying against oppressor and oppression."[5] He adds: This month is called "the month of accepting the supplications"; thus one must seize the opportunities in this month and observe "fasting of Wishes"[6] (fast in order to get what he wants from God)."

Mirza Jawad Maliki Tabrizi wrote in his book al-Muraqibat: "This month is the first Sacred Month, in which fighting and war even against unbelievers is forbidden, so how about fighting and opposing God of the universe in this month! The heart and the body must be kept away from sins and disobeying God in these months more than other times."[7]

Sundays
The eve of 15th
  • The night of worship, prayer, and asking Allah for forgiveness. It is narrated that Allah would meet the needs of the ones who pray for their needs.[8]
23rd
  • Ziyarah (visiting) of Imam al-Rida (a); it has been narrated that Ziyarah of Imam al-Rida (a) is especially recommended on this day.
25th (Dahw al-Ard)
  • Fasting
  • Ghusl
  • Ziyarah of Imam al-Rida (a).
  • A two rak'a prayer should be performed in this manner: Sura al-Fatiha (Qur'an 1) followed by Sura al-Shams (Qua'an 91) five times, this is the same for both rak'as. Once the Salat is finished the following phrase should be recited once":لا حول ولاقوة إلا بالله العلی العظیم"[9] which means "There is no might nor power except Allah, the Most High, the Greatest". Then pray before Allah and recite the following du'a: "یا مُقِیلَ الْعَثَرَاتِ أَقِلْنِی عَثْرَتِی یا مُجِیبَ الدَّعَوَاتِ أَجِبْ دَعْوَتِی یا سَامِعَ الْأَصْوَاتِ اسْمَعْ صَوْتِی وَ ارْحَمْنِی وَ تَجَاوَزْ عَنْ سَیئَاتِی وَ مَا عِنْدِی یا ذَا الْجَلالِ وَ الْإِکرامِ, which means:"O He who tolerates lapses, bear with my false steps, O He who responds to supplications, answer to my prayers,O He who pays attention to (all) voices, hear my cry, and have mercy on me, overlook my wrongdoings and opposition, O Owner of might and majesty".
  • Reciting the special supplication of this day as follows:
O Allah, (Who) spread the Ka'ba
O Allah, (Who) spread the Kaa'bah, split the grain of corn, mitigates hardships, alleviates sorrows, I ask Thee today, [one of the days, belonging to Thee, which on account of their privileges, and availability of Thy unrestricted mercy (in them), have been declared important, given preference over (other days), and exclusively specified for the believers], to send blessing son Muhammad, Thy high-minded, great-hearted and generous servant, (whom we will) meet, very soon, on the promised Day of Judgment, (who) opened that which was kept locked and shut, and invited to truth, in every walk of life; an on his "Ahl al-Bayt" (children) the pure (above board) guides, giving light to people to sustain harmony and unity, and have the authority to admit into Paradise or sent to Hell; and give me today from Thy repository of grants, neither restricted nor denied (to the needy), and let us collect ourselves and turn to repentance and recovery اَللَّهُمَّ دَاحِی الْکعْبَةِ وَ فَالِقَ الْحَبَّةِ وَ صَارِفَ اللَّزْبَةِ وَ کاشِفَ کلِّ کرْبَةٍ، أَسْأَلُک فِی هَذَا الْیوْمِ مِنْ أَیامِک الَّتِی أَعْظَمْتَ حَقَّهَا وَ أَقْدَمْتَ سَبْقَهَا وَ جَعَلْتَهَا عِنْدَ الْمُؤْمِنِینَ وَدِیعَةً وَ إِلَیک ذَرِیعَةً وَ بِرَحْمَتِک الْوَسِیعَةِ أَنْ تُصَلِّی عَلَی مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِک الْمُنْتَجَبِ فِی الْمِیثَاقِ الْقَرِیبِ یوْمَ التَّلاقِ فَاتِقِ کلِّ رَتْقٍ وَ دَاعٍ إِلَی کلِّ حَقٍّ وَ عَلَی أَهْلِ بَیتِهِ الْأَطْهَارِ الْهُدَاةِ الْمَنَارِ دَعَائِمِ الْجَبَّارِ وَ وُلاةِ الْجَنَّةِ وَ النَّارِ وَ أَعْطِنَا فِی یوْمِنَا هَذَا مِنْ عَطَائِک الْمَخْزُونِ غَیرَ مَقْطُوعٍ وَ لا مَمْنُوعٍ [مَمْنُونٍ] تَجْمَعُ لَنَا بِهِ التَّوْبَةَ وَ حُسْنَ الْأَوْبَةِ،
O He who is called as the most favorite in exclusion to (all) others, and (who is) more generous (than others) in the matter of fulfilling hopes, O He who gives enough, O He who keeps His words, O He who treats with kindness and benevolence without making a show of it, be kind and friendly towards me, make me happy with Thy favours, lend me Thy helping hand, do not leave me out unmentioned from Thy reward giving list, for the sake of those who carry out Thy commands and take care of Thy most confidential policies, and keep me safe from the fraud and deceit of materialist vicissitudes, till the day Thou shall raise the dead for the final judgment; and let Thy close confidants be present beside me at the time when my soul departs, body disintegrates, activity ceases to operate, and my appointed time comes to an end. O Allah keep me in mind in the long hours of agony when I take quarters in between the layers of the earth, the preoccupied forgetful put me out of their head and think no more of me, and (I ask Thee to) settle me in the ever luxuriant land, and lodge me in a lovable comforting house, in the midst and company of Thy close friends and people who have been selected and chosen for Thy neighborhood, make my meeting with thee a blissful occasion, (so that it takes place) keep me alive adhering to good in my day to day life here, free from waywardness and indecent indulgence, before the appointed time comes to an end, (then) O Allah let me reach the cistern (center) of Thy Prophet, Muhammad, blessing of Allah be on him and on his children), and quench my thirst there, thoroughly, in plenty, gliding the wholesome water pleasantly down the throat, never to be thirsty again, never to be kept away from it once I am there, never to be driven off, and let it be my most reliable preparation, quite sufficient for the questioning session on the day when witnesses will be brought. یا خَیرَ مَدْعُوٍّ وَ أَکرَمَ مَرْجُوٍّ یا کفِی یا وَفِی یا مَنْ لُطْفُهُ خَفِی الْطُفْ لِی بِلُطْفِک وَ أَسْعِدْنِی بِعَفْوِک وَ أَیدْنِی بِنَصْرِک وَ لا تُنْسِنِی کرِیمَ ذِکرِک بِوُلاةِ أَمْرِک وَ حَفَظَةِ سِرِّک وَ احْفَظْنِی مِنْ شَوَائِبِ الدَّهْرِ إِلَی یوْمِ الْحَشْرِ وَ النَّشْرِ وَ أَشْهِدْنِی أَوْلِیاءَک عِنْدَ خُرُوجِ نَفْسِی وَ حُلُولِ رَمْسِی وَ انْقِطَاعِ عَمَلِی وَ انْقِضَاءِ أَجَلِی اللَّهُمَّ وَ اذْکرْنِی عَلَی طُولِ الْبِلَی إِذَا حَلَلْتُ بَینَ أَطْبَاقِ الثَّرَی وَ نَسِینِی النَّاسُونَ مِنَ الْوَرَی وَ أَحْلِلْنِی‌دار الْمُقَامَةِ وَ بَوِّئْنِی مَنْزِلَ الْکرَامَةِ، وَ اجْعَلْنِی مِنْ مُرَافِقِی أَوْلِیائِک وَ أَهْلِ اجْتِبَائِک وَ اصْطِفَائِک وَ بَارِک لِی فِی لِقَائِک وَ ارْزُقْنِی حُسْنَ الْعَمَلِ قَبْلَ حُلُولِ الْأَجَلِ بَرِیئا مِنَ الزَّلَلِ وَ سُوءِ الْخَطَلِ اللَّهُمَّ وَ أَوْرِدْنِی حَوْضَ نَبِیک مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّی اللَّهُ عَلَیهِ وَ آلِهِ وَ اسْقِنِی مِنْهُ مَشْرَبا رَوِیا سَائِغا هَنِیئا لا أَظْمَأُ بَعْدَهُ وَ لا أُحَلَّأُ وِرْدَهُ وَ لا عَنْهُ أُذَادُ وَ اجْعَلْهُ لِی خَیرَ زَادٍ وَ أَوْفَی مِیعَادٍ یوْمَ یقُومُ الْأَشْهَادُ.
O Allah curse the oppressors from beginning to the end, who stirred up trouble and took possession of that which rightly belonged to Thy trustworthy representatives. O Allah put an end to their rule, destroy their followers and agents swiftly complete their ruin, freeze their properties, and let their methods and institutions enter on the narrow road ending at a dead end. Damn their theoreticians and their associates. O Allah, send Thy trustworthy representatives at once, wrongs done to them may be redeemed their "al-Qa'im" (living representative may be given his rightful opportunity to appear, appoint him to give currency to Thy religion and to establish law and order by marking out the boundaries to end the domination of Thy enemies.

O Allah let Thy Angels form a protective right around him, give him the responsibility to turn the tables on (Thy enemies) as has been decided in the night of Qadr, till Thou gets satisfied and Thy religion is re-established through him, blooming in full growth afresh on his hands, promote his cause by making it the pure truth, and let the falsehood disappear totally discredited. O Allah send blessings on him and on all his forefathers, and let us be his companions and familiar friends, bring us back to life so that he takes us in his service, so far as we prove ourselves his staunch supporters during his tenure. O Allah make us reach his days of renaissance and follow his leadership, and see with our own eyes his (golden) era, send blessings on him and favour us by conveying his message of goodwill to us, peace be on him and Allah's mercy and blessing be on him.

اللَّهُمَّ وَ الْعَنْ جَبَابِرَةَ الْأَوَّلِینَ وَ الْآخِرِینَ وَ بِحُقُوقِ [لِحُقُوقِ] أَوْلِیائِک الْمُسْتَأْثِرِینَ اللَّهُمَّ وَ اقْصِمْ دَعَائِمَهُمْ وَ أَهْلِک أَشْیاعَهُمْ وَ عَامِلَهُمْ وَ عَجِّلْ مَهَالِکهُمْ وَ اسْلُبْهُمْ مَمَالِکهُمْ وَ ضَیقْ عَلَیهِمْ مَسَالِکهُمْ وَ الْعَنْ مُسَاهِمَهُمْ وَ مُشَارِکهُمْ. اَللَّهُمَّ وَ عَجِّلْ فَرَجَ أَوْلِیائِک وَ ارْدُدْ عَلَیهِمْ مَظَالِمَهُمْ وَ أَظْهِرْ بِالْحَقِّ قَائِمَهُمْ وَ اجْعَلْهُ لِدِینِک مُنْتَصِرا وَ بِأَمْرِک فِی أَعْدَائِک مُؤْتَمِرا اللَّهُمَّ احْفُفْهُ بِمَلائِکةِ النَّصْرِ وَ بِمَا أَلْقَیتَ إِلَیهِ مِنَ الْأَمْرِ فِی لَیلَةِ الْقَدْرِ مُنْتَقِما لَک حَتَّی تَرْضَی وَ یعُودَ دِینُک بِهِ وَ عَلَی یدَیهِ جَدِیدا غَضّا وَ یمْحَضَ الْحَقَّ مَحْضا وَ یرْفِضَ الْبَاطِلَ رَفْضا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَیهِ وَ عَلَی جَمِیعِ آبَائِهِ وَ اجْعَلْنَا مِنْ صَحْبِهِ وَ أُسْرَتِهِ وَ ابْعَثْنَا فِی کرَّتِهِ حَتَّی نَکونَ فِی زَمَانِهِ مِنْ أَعْوَانِهِ اللَّهُمَّ أَدْرِک بِنَا قِیامَهُ وَ أَشْهِدْنَا أَیامَهُ وَ صَلِّ عَلَیهِ [عَلَی مُحَمَّدٍ] وَ ارْدُدْ إِلَینَا سَلامَهُ وَ السَّلامُ عَلَیهِ [عَلَیهِمْ] وَ رَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَ بَرَکاتُهُ.
