Sha'ban 1446

Shaʿbān (Arabic: شَعْبان) or Shaʿbān al-Muʿaẓẓam (Arabic: شَعبانُ المُعَظّم) is the eighth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. According to hadiths, it is a month with great virtues, during which fasting, giving charity, salutations, and reciting specific supplications like the sha'baniyya salutation and the sha'baniyya supplication are recommended. Additionally, there are several religious occasions in this month, including the births of Imam al-Husayn (a), Imam al-Sajjad (a), Imam al-Mahdi (a), and Abu l-Fadl al-'Abbas (a) which are collectively known as the Sha'baniyya celebrations.

Virtue

Since in the month of Sha'ban the sustenance of believers and good deeds are greatly multiplied, it is called Sha'ban, which comes from the root word "Sha'b" (meaning to disperse or scatter).[1] According to narrations, the month of Sha'ban is the month of the Prophet Muhammad (s).[2] The Prophet (s) would fast during Sha'ban and connect it to the month of Ramadan.[3] Several narrations from the infallibles (a) emphasize the virtue of the month of Sha'ban.[4] It is narrated from Imam Ali (a) that whoever fasts in the month of Sha'ban to seek the love of the Prophet of God and draw closer to God, God will love them, grant them His honor on the Day of Judgment, and make Paradise obligatory for them.[5] According to some narrations from Imam Ali (a), he would fast the entire month of Sha'ban.[6]

It is narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (a) that when the Prophet (s) would see the crescent moon of Sha'ban, he would say in Medina: "O people of Yathrib (Medina), I am the messenger of God to you. Be aware that Shaban is my month. May God extend His mercy to anyone who helps me in my city."[7] Imam Ali (a) considered fasting in the month of Sha'ban as a way of assisting the Messenger of God (s). In another narration, Imam al-Baqir (a) said: "Fasting in the month of Shaban is the fasting of the prophets and the followers of the prophets. Whoever fasts in Sha'ban will be included in the prayer of the Prophet (s) who said: 'May God have mercy on anyone who helps me in my city.'"[8]

Ayatullah Jawadi Amuli, a Shia philosopher and exegete, believes that those who have an ethical year (meaning a year of moral striving) dedicate their efforts to fulfilling both the rights of God and the rights of others during the month of Sha'ban. They spend this month with effort, striving, and with cries of repentance, so they are not in debt and seek to repent, so that when the start of their new year (Ramadan) arrives, they are spiritually enriched.[9]

Many Muslims observe the last day of this month as Yawm al-Shakk (the Day of Doubt) and fast on that day.

The heavens and everything within them, the earth and everything upon it, wept for him even before his feet touched the earth. He is the slain one of sorrow, the master of the family, supported by victory on the day of return, and compensated by his martyrdom. The Imams will come from his lineage, healing will be found in his soil, and he will achieve victory in his return. The successors from his progeny will come after their Qa’im and during his occultation, until they fulfill the vows, seek revenge, please the Almighty, and become the best supporters of the truth. Peace be upon them, with the alternation of night and day.

O Allah, by their right, I seek Your intercession and ask You as one who has sinned and acknowledges his wrongdoings, having fallen short in his duties of today and yesterday, seeking from You protection until the moment of his burial. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and his family, gather us with them in their group, and grant us a place of honor and abode with them in the house of dignity. O Allah, just as You have honored us with the recognition of him, honor us with closeness to him, grant us his companionship and his precedence, and make us among those who submit to his command and frequently send blessings upon him when his name is mentioned, and upon all of his successors and the purified members of his family, those who are sustained by You, the twelve bright stars and the proofs (Hujjat) to all of humanity.

  • Reading the Du'a: "Allāhumma anta muta‘ālī al-makān":[13]
O Allah, You are exalted above all places, the Most Great in majesty, the Most Powerful in dominion, the Most Severe in control, independent of the creation, vast in Your grandeur, able to do whatever You will, near in mercy, true in Your promises, generous in blessings, excellent in trial, near when You are called upon, encompassing in Your creation, accepting of repentance from those who return to You, capable of what You will, able to reach what is sought, appreciative when thanked, remembered when remembered. I call upon You in my need and turn to You in my poverty, I seek refuge in You in my fear, and I cry to You in my distress, I seek Your help in my weakness, and I place my trust in You as sufficient. Judge between us and our people with truth, for they have deceived us, betrayed us, forsaken us, and wronged us. We are the progeny of Your Prophet and the children of Your Beloved Muhammad, son of Abdullah, whom You chose for the mission and entrusted with Your revelation. So grant us relief and a way out of our situation, through Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

To You belongs majesty, favor, praise, grace, generosity, kindness, command, glory, and gratitude. You alone, with no partner, are worthy of all these. O One, O Unique, O Eternal Refuge, O He who neither begets nor is begotten, and there is none like unto You. Send blessings upon Muhammad and his family, and forgive me, have mercy on me, remove my worries, settle my debts, and expand my sustenance. Indeed, on this night, every wise matter is distributed, and You provide for whom You will from Your creation. So provide for me, for You are the best of providers. As You have said, and You are the best of speakers: 'Ask Allah from His bounty.' And from Your bounty, I ask, and to You, I direct my plea, and I rely upon the son of Your Prophet. I hope in You, so have mercy on me, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

O Allah, grant us the benefit of our hearing, sight, and strength as long as You keep us alive and make them the legacy we leave behind. And grant us victory over those who have wronged us, and support us against those who oppose us. Acts of the last night
  • Supplication of the last night of Sha'ban:
O Allah, this blessed month in which the Qur’an was revealed, a guidance for the people, and clear signs of guidance and a distinction between truth and falsehood, has arrived. Please keep us safe in it and preserve it for us. Accept it from us in ease and complete safety. O You Who accepts little and appreciates much, accept from me the little I offer. O Allah, I ask You to guide me to every good, and to place a barrier between me and everything You disapprove of. O Most Merciful of the merciful, O You Who pardoned me for the hidden wrongdoings I committed, and did not rebuke me for my sins, I ask for Your forgiveness, Your forgiveness, Your forgiveness, O Generous One. O Allah, You admonished me, but I did not take heed. You warned me against Your forbidden things, yet I did not stop. So what excuse do I have? Forgive me, O Generous One. I ask for Your forgiveness, Your forgiveness.
O Allah! I ask You for ease at the time of death and forgiveness during the reckoning. My sins have become great, so it is fitting that Your pardon be generous. O You Who are the most protective, and worthy of forgiveness, I ask for Your forgiveness, Your forgiveness. O Allah! I am Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your maidservant. I am weak and in need of Your mercy. You are the one who brings wealth and blessings to Your servants, the Mighty and Able. You have counted the deeds of Your servants and distributed their provisions. You have made their tongues and colors different, a creation after another. Your servants do not know the extent of Your knowledge, and they cannot measure Your greatness. We are all in need of Your mercy. Turn not Your face away from me, and make me, in action, desire, fate, and destiny, among the deserving of Your servants.
O Allah, keep me alive in the best of states, and cause me to die the best of deaths, based on the love for Your friends, and enmity with Your enemies, a desire for You, and fear of Your presence, humility, loyalty, and submission at Your threshold, belief in Your Book, and following the way of Your Messenger. O Allah, whatever is in my heart—whether doubt, denial, despair, vain happiness, arrogance, rebellion, self-centeredness, hypocrisy, desire for fame, sowing discord, duplicity, disbelief, disobedience, sin, boastfulness, or anything that is displeasing to You—I ask You, my Lord, to transform them into faith in Your promise, fulfillment of Your covenant, contentment with Your decree, piety in this world, longing for what is with You, good choice, peace, and sincere repentance. I ask all of this from You, O Lord of all the worlds. O my God, by Your forbearance, disobedience occurs, and by Your generosity and kindness, obedience is achieved, as if You have never been disobeyed. I and those who do not disobey You are the inhabitants of Your earth. Be generous to us with Your grace and return to us with goodness, O Most Merciful of the merciful. And may the blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad and his family, a continuous prayer that cannot be counted, nor measured, and whose worth is known only to You, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

  • The Du'a Ilahi ta'aradha laka fi hadha l-layl al-muta'aridhun:
My Lord, in this night, those who are seeking Your mercy have turned to You, and those who are aiming for You have directed their hearts toward You. Those who hope for Your grace and goodness are eagerly asking from You. In this night, there are breaths of Your mercy, rewards, gifts, and blessings which You bestow upon whom You will from Your servants and withhold from whom Your attention has not reached. Here I am, Your humble servant, poor and in need of You, hoping for Your grace and kindness. If, O my Master, You have bestowed Your favor upon anyone of Your creation in this night and granted them the bounty of Your mercy, then send blessings upon Muhammad and his pure, righteous, and noble family, and bestow upon me Your grace and kindness, O Lord of all the worlds. May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, and his pure family. Indeed, Allah is Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, I call upon You as You have commanded, so answer me as You have promised. Indeed, You do not break Your promise.
