Scholars suggest that, unlike Sunnis, Shi'as did not universally accept hadiths prohibiting iconography, regarding only the depiction of the Prophet (s) as an exception.[8] According to certain researchers, Sunni jurisprudence generally deemed imagery impermissible for the representation of religious teachings and Islamic history. Consequently, depictions of the Prophet (s) are scarce in regions such as India, Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Nigeria, and Pakistan, as well as during the Ottoman era.[9] Conversely, the tradition of depicting the Prophet (s) in Iran is considered to have a long and continuous history.[10]

Themes such as the presence of the Messenger of God (s) in battles and conquests, his birth, and the Mi'raj have garnered significant attention, being rendered in diverse artistic styles.[11] Reports indicate that the first depiction of the Prophet's (s) face occurred in the book Jami' al-Tawarikh, authored by Rashid al-Din Fadl Allah al-Hamadani (d. 718/1318).[12] Notable paintings related to the Prophet of Islam (s) include:

  • The oldest Iranian depictions of the Prophet's (s) Mi'raj, showing him astride the Buraq,[13] along with another painting of Prophet Muhammad (s) and Gabriel (a) before a massive Angel (attributed to Ahmad Musa), are dated to the Ilkhanid period (654/1256–750/1349).[14] Another Mi'raj-themed painting, reported by Abd al-Hayy, is attributed to the Jalayirid era.[15] All three works are housed in the Topkapi Palace Library in Istanbul.[16]
  • The Miraj-nama of Shahrukh, a work attributed to the post-Baysunghur Mirza era depicting the Prophet's (s) Mi'raj, is held at the National Museum in Paris.[17]
  • A painting of the Prophet's (s) Mi'raj from the Turkmen period (circa 911/1505) is preserved in the India Office Library in London. Additionally, a painter named Farhad from the same era created a depiction of the Mi'raj utilizing a novel style of Iranian painting; this work is kept in the Golestan Palace in Tehran.[18]
  • A Safavid-era image of the Prophet's (s) Mi'raj by Muhammad Naqqash is held in the British Library.[19]

Reports indicate the existence of numerous paintings from the Qajar period, including five Mi'raj-namas (Iranian painting albums)[20] in the National Library.[21] Contemporary artists of the 20th century, such as Sadr Shayesteh Shirazi,[22] Mahmoud Farshchian,[23] and Hassan Ruh al-Amin,[24] have also produced paintings featuring Prophet Muhammad (s).
