Ghusl al-Ziyāra (Arabic: غسل الزيارة) is a Ghusl performed when visiting the graves of the Infallibles. A group of jurists consider this ghusl to be recommended, while another group says it is permissible to perform it only with the intention of hope for reward.

Definition

Ghusl al-Ziyara is a ghusl performed at the time of visiting the graves of the infallibles (a).[1] According to Kashif al-Ghita', some consider Ghusl al-Ziyara to include visiting the graves of prophets as well.[2] Also, in narrations from Imam al-Sadiq (a), performing ghusl for visiting the Ka'ba has been recommended.[3]

Jurisprudential View

A number of jurists consider Ghusl al-Ziyara to be recommended.[4] Ibn Zuhra has claimed consensus on its recommendation,[5] and Muhammad Hasan al-Najafi, another Shi'a jurist, has considered it famous in al-Jawahir.[6] In narrations, performing ghusl has been specifically recommended for visiting the graves of some Infallibles such as the Prophet (s), Imam al-Husayn (a), and Imam al-Rida (a). Muhammad Baqir al-Bihbahani, one of the marja's, citing that the Imams are from a single light (nur l-wahid), considered it to include all Infallibles.[7] Some believe that one can perform ghusl for Ziyara from a distance as well.[8]

Some jurists, such as Sayyid Abu l-Qasim al-Khoei, Sayyid Ali al-Sistani, and Nasir Makarim Shirazi have not accepted the recommendation of Ghusl al-Ziyara and consider performing it valid only with the intention of hope for reward; meaning with the hope that it is desired.[9] In the view of a group of Shi'a jurists, Ghusl al-Ziyara is recommended for entering the shrine of an Infallible even without the intention of Ziyara.[10]

Can one pray with Ghusl al-Ziyara?

Some jurists have issued a fatwa that one can pray with all obligatory and recommended ghusls except the Ghusl al-Istihada. However, the recommended precaution (al-ihtiyat al-mustahabb) is to perform wudu as well in cases other than Ghusl al-Janaba.[11]
