Manāqib ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib wa mā nazal min al-Qurʾān fī ʿAlī (Arabic: مَناقِبُ عَلیّ بْن أبی طالب وَ ما نَزَلَ مِنَ القُرْآنِ فی عَلیّ) or Manāqib Ibn Mardawayh (Arabic: مناقب ابن مَرْدَوَیْه), is a book written by Ahmad b. Musa b. Mardawayh al-Isfahani (d. 410/ 1019-20), a Sunni scholar of hadith. The book is concerned with the virtues of Ali b. Abi Talib (a). The author devoted a chapter of the book to Qur'anic verses regarding Imam Ali (a), involving verses from fifty chapters of the Qur'an in this regard.

About the Author

Abu Bakr Ahmad b. Musa b. Mardawayh al-Isfahani, a Sunni scholar of hadith, Qur'anic exegesis and history, was born in 323/934-5 in Isfahan. He was so respected in hadiths that he was known as "Hafiz". He wrote many works, such as Tafsir al-Qur'an, al-Amali, Musnad fi l-hadith, Kitab al-'ilm, Kitab al-du'a', Tarikh Isbahan (history of Isfahan), al-Jami' fi al-tibb, and about twenty other works. Ibn Mardawayh died in 410/1019-20.[1]

Style of Writing

The author provided a brief biography of Imam Ali (a) and then mentioned his virtues. The book relies on hadiths, but in many cases, the author mentioned only one or two people in his chains of narrations,[2] dropping the rest.

Content

In the first part of the book, Ibn Mardawayh introduced the virtues of Imam Ali (a) in twenty-two chapters. He mentioned Imam Ali's (a) teknonyms and titles, his conversion to Islam, his faith, his knowledge, his piety, his courage and the like, citing hadiths such as Hadith al-Tayr, Hadith Radd al-Shams, and Hadith Sadd al-Abwab. He also talked about the virtues of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (a), Imam al-Hasan (a), Imam al-Husayn (a), and other people from Ahl al-Bayt (a).[3]

The second part of the book, under "what was revealed in the Qur'an regarding Ali", involves verses of different suras of the Qur'an regarding the virtues of Imam Ali (a).[4]

Significance and Reliability

The book was significant for many scholars. Scholars who cited Manaqib Ibn Mardawayh include: Ibn Shahrashub, Ibn Tawus, Irbili, 'Imad al-Din al-Tabari, 'Allama al-Hilli, and al-Allama al-Majlisi. According to some of these scholars, Ibn Mardawayh has written similar books for other companions as well.[5]
