Abad wa-llah ma nansa Husayna
ʾAbad wa-llāh mā nansā Ḥusaynā (Arabic: أَبَد وَالله ما نَنْسیٰ حُسَینا) (By God, we will never forget al-Husayn (a)), is a rhythmic phrase recited in mourning for the martyrdom of Imam al-Husayn (a), including the Tuwairij Mourning.[1]
Some poets have used this hemistich in composing religious poems[2] and as a refrain.[3] Also, eulogist such as Nazar Qatari and Basim al-Karbala'i have included this phrase in their eulogies.[4]Sometimes it has been rendered as "Abad wa-llah lan nansa Ḥusaynā" (Arabic: أَبَد وَالله لَنْ نَنْسیٰ حُسَینا), using lan instead of mā. While mā is a simple negation equivalent to “not,” lan conveys a stronger, future-oriented negation—emphasizing that we will never forget Husayn (a).
It is also reported that Iraqi mourners have used this phrase as a slogan when facing obstacles and threats against the mourning ceremonies of Imam al-Husayn (a), including clashes with the forces of the Ba'athist government in the Safar Uprising in Iraq (1977)[5] or ISIS attacks against mourners.[6]
