Ādam b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿd al-Ashʿarī al-Qummī (Arabic: آدم بن عبدالله بن سعد الأشعري القمي) (b. between 60 AH/680 and 65 AH/685 – d. c. 185 AH/801) was a Shi'a Imami narrator[1] and a companion of Imam al-Sadiq (a).[2]
He belonged to the Ash'ari family.[3] His children, Zakariyya b. Adam and Ishaq,[4] and his grandchildren, Ali b. Adam and Adam b. Ishaq,[5] were narrators of hadith. Some authors, citing a hadith in al-Khisal by al-Shaykh al-Saduq,[6] have stated that Adam b. Abd Allah also narrated hadith from Imam al-Rida (a) through his son, Zakariyya.[7]
His brother, 'Imran b. 'Abd Allah, was praised by Imam al-Sadiq (a), who described him and his family with phrases such as "among the chosen of the Ahl al‑Bayt," "among the noble members of the Household," and "a noble man from a noble lineage."[8] However, some sources attribute this praise to Adam b. 'Abd Allah.[9]
It is estimated that Adam b. 'Abd Allah was born in Kufa between 60 AH/680 and 65 AH/685.[10] He spent his childhood and adolescence in Kufa, then migrated to Qom, where he resided until the end of his life.[11] His death is reported to have occurred around 185 AH/801 at the age of 120.[12] His grave is located in the old cemetery of Qom (Babilan), near the Holy Shrine of Lady Fatima al-Ma'suma (a).[13]
