His name, as recorded by Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani, was "Hatam" and his epithet was "Abu l-Qasim".[1] His date of birth is not known.

Position

He was one of the outstanding and trustworthy companions of Imam al-Baqir (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a);[2] according to al-Kashshi (famous scholar of 'ilm al-rijal) Burayd was among the six most famous Shi'a jurists of his time who contributed widely to spread Shi'a teachings. These six jurists are called Afqah al-Awwalin (the early jurists).[3] These jurists are the first generation of Ashab al-Ijma' (People of Consensus).

Ibn al-Ghada'iri had seen Burayd's book, narrated by 'Ali b. 'Uqba.[4] Burayd narrated hadith from Imam al-Baqir (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a) directly; he also occasionally narrates hadith from the two Imams indirectly through Muhammad b. Muslim.[5]

In The View of Imams (a)

Some narrations have been quoted from Imam al-Sadiq (a) and Imam al-Kazim (a) admiring Burayd and some of other companions; in these narrations, these companions are admired as "the revivers of prophetic narrations, guardians of religion, God's guardians of His law,[6] the most beloved companions to Imam al-Sadiq (a), the apostles of Imam al-Baqir (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a) who received the promise of entrance to paradise.[7]

Al-Kashshi mentioned three narrations reproaching Burayd by Imams which have been rejected by later hadith scholars, firstly, because of unauthorized persons in the chain of narrators of those narrations, and secondly, because there are signs of taqqiyya (dissimulation) in these narrations.[8]

Demise

Al-Najashi reported Burayd's demise at the time of Imam al-Sadiq (a) (before 148/765-6);[9] but some other scholars recorded his demise in 150/767-8.[10]
