Al-Jawāhirī Mosque (Arabic: جامِع الْجَواهری) or Āl al-Jawāhirī Mosque is one of the famous mosques in Najaf. It is located in the al-Amara district[1] near the Holy Shrine of Imam Ali (a) and the al-Shaykh al-Tusi Mosque.[2]

The mosque is known as "al-Jawahiri" because Muhammad Hasan al-Najafi (d. 1266/1850), known as "Sahib al-Jawahir" (the Author of al-Jawahir), is buried there.[3] This mosque is regarded as one of the important centers of study and scholarly discussion for students of the Najaf Seminary.[4]

Seminary classes held in al-Jawahiri Mosque[5]

This mosque was renovated and expanded by Shaykh Jawad al-Jawahiri, a grandson of Muhammad Hasan al-Najafi.[6] Another grandson of Muhammad Hasan al-Najafi, al-Shaykh Muhammad Taqi al-Jawahiri, served as the mosque's imam. He was arrested by the Ba'ath regime in Iraq and was martyred in 1980.[7]

According to reports, the funeral procession of Sayyid Mustafa Khomeini set out from this mosque and proceeded to the Shrine of Imam Ali (a).[8]

It is also reported that on the night of February 11, 1979, Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr delivered a speech in al-Jawahiri Mosque and spoke about the Islamic Revolution of Iran, the role of Imam Khomeini in the victory of this revolution, the reform of the Islamic umma, and the responsibility of the people of Iraq to rise up against the government.[9] It is reported that demonstrations were held in various Iraqi cities the following day.[10]
