Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Faḍḍāl al-Taymulī al-Kūfī (Arabic: حَسَن بن عَلي بن فَضّال التَيمُلي الکُوفي) is a reliable Shi'a narrator and a close companion of Imam al-Rida (a). He had the opportunity to meet Imam al-Kazim (a), as well. Some scholars count him among People of Consensus. At first, he believed in Imamate of 'Abd Allah al-Aftah, the son of Imam al-Sadiq (a); however, before his demise, he repented and believed in the Imamate of Imam al-Rida (a). Although he was initially Fatahi, some scholars of rijal have praised him for his piety and reliability in narration of hadith.
He passed away in 224/838-9. Several books have been mentioned as his works.
Lineage and Teknonym
Abu Ali al-Hasan b. 'Ali b. Faddal[1] al-Taymuli b. Rabi'a b. Bakr, was a slave freed by Taym Allah b. Tha'laba.[2] He is a member of Banu Faddal family, which is counted as a scholarly Shi'a family. Many members of the family are narrators of hadith.
Banu Faddal believed in Imamate of 'Abd Allah al-Aftah – the son of Imam al-Sadiq (a) – after the demise of Imam al-Sadiq (a); however, they were reliable and trustworthy in their narration. It is narrated that some companions of Imam al-'Askari (a) asked him about the credibility of hadiths narrated by Banu Faddal; Imam answered: "Accept what they have narrated and leave what they believe in."[3]
His teknonym is Abu Muhammad.[4] Some have mentioned Abu Bakr as his teknonym, although it seems that it is confused with "Ibn Bakr" in his lineage.[5]
Status in Rijal
Some scholars of rijal have counted al-Hasan b. Faddal among the People of Consensus.[6] He is praised and admired for his virtues, knowledge, piety, fiqh, and devotion. Describing him, al-Shaykh al-Tusi writes: "al-Hasan b. Faddal has narrated hadith from Imam al-Rida (a) and was counted among the close companions of him. He was a great and high-status person, who was reliable in his narration."[7]
Muhsin al-Amin says, "Although there is a disagreement about the exact time of Ibn Faddal's repentance from his belief in Fatahiyya, his belonging to this sect does not undermine the reliability of his narration and there is no excuse for not accepting the Hadiths that he has narrated, whether it was during his affiliation with Fatahiyya or after it; especially after Imam al-'Askari's (a) order to rely on the hadiths narrated by Banu Faddal."[8]
Narrating a historical report from al-Fadl b. Shadhan about the piety and asceticism of al-Hasan b. Faddal, al-Kashshi has counted him among the reliable narrators.[9]
