Sūra Quraysh (Arabic: سورة قريش) or Sūra al-Īlāf (Arabic: سورة الإیلاف) is 106th sura of the Qur'an. It is a Makki sura located in juz' thirty. This sura is called "Quraysh" or "Ilaf" because it speaks about the solidarity among Quraysh.

It mentions the blessings of God for Quraysh and their duties toward those blessings. It is narrated from the Prophet (s) that whoever recites Sura Quraysh, God will reward him ten times more than the number of those who circumambulate the Ka'ba and those who stay in Masjid al-Haram .

Introduction

  • Naming

This sura is called Quraysh or Ilaf because it speaks about the solidarity among Quraysh ["li-ilaf Quraysh"].[1]

  • Place and Order of Revelation

Sura Quraysh is a Makki sura and is twenty nineth sura in the order of revelation. It is 106th sura in the Qur'an[2] located in juz' thirty.

  • Number of Verses and Words

Sura Quraysh has four verses, seventeen words and seventy six letters. It is among short suras of the Qur'an.[3]

Content

Form the beginning to the end, Sura Quraysh speaks about Quraysh, God's blessings for them and their duties toward those blessings. There, God advises that the base of this solidarity should be worshipping God, the Owner of the Ka'ba, Who satiated their hunger and bestowed upon them well-being, security and tranquility.[4]

Suras al-Fil and Quraysh as One Sura

Exegetes believe that Suras Qur'an 105 (Sura al-Fil) and Quraysh are one sura, due to the connections between their contents. Thus, if someone chooses Sura Quraysh to recite after Qur'an 1 (Sura al-Fatiha) in prayer, one needs to recite Sura al-Fil as well because it is obligatory to recite one complete sura after Sura al-Fatiha.[6]

Merits and Benefits

It is narrated from the Prophet (s) that whoever recites Sura Quraysh, God will reward him ten times more than the number of those who circumambulate the Ka'ba and those who stay in al-Masjid al-Haram.[7]

According to a hadith from Imam al-Sadiq (a), the fruit of reciting Sura Quraysh frequently is that on the Day of Judgment, God will resurrect the person to ride a conveyance from the Paradise so that he sits at tables of light.[8]

In some hadiths, certain benefits are mentioned for reciting this sura such as healing food poisoning and heart diseases.[9]
