Sūra al-Ṭūr (Arabic: سورة الطور) is the fifty second sura of the Qur'an. It is a Makki sura and located in juz' twenty seven. In the first verse of this sura, it is sworn upon "al-Tur" (the Mount), and therefore this sura is called "al-Tur". It is said that "al-Tur" refers to the mountain where Prophet Moses (a) received revelations. Sura al-Tur threatens disbelievers with punishment and mentions some of its attributes. Then, it describes some of the blessings of the Paradise and admonishes the deniers of the prophethood of the Prophet (s). About the merits of the recitation of Sura al-Tur, one of the transmitted hadiths says that whoever recites it, will be away from the punishment of Hell, resides in the Paradise and will receive the good of this world and the Hereafter.
Introduction
Naming
This sura is called "al-Tur" because in its first verse, it is sworn upon "al-Tur".[1] In al-Mizan, Allama Tabataba'i wrote, "al-Tur refers to the mountain where Moses (a) received the revelation."[2]
Place and Order of Revelation
Sura al-Tur is a Makki sura (revealed in Mecca) and was seventy-sixth sura revealed to the Prophet (s). In the current order of compilation, It is fifty-second sura of the Qur'an,[3] located in juz' twenty seven.
Number of Verses and Other Features
Sura al-Ture has forty seven verses, 313 words and 1324 letters. Regarding volume, this sura is among Mufassalat suras (having several short verses) and begins with a swear.[4]
Content
According to al-Mizan, the main theme of Sura al-Tur is threatening those who fought with the truth. This sura warns disbelievers about the punishment assigned for them on the Day of Judgment and has declared it definite using some oaths. Then, it mentions some attributes of that punishment and on the opposite, it describes some of the blessings of the dwellers of the Paradise. It then admonishes the deniers of the prophethood of the Prophet (s) and those who slandered him. At the end, this sura orders the Prophet (s) to praise God.[5]

Location of Mount al-Tur
In Tafsir al-Qummi, it is mentioned that al-Tur is the name of a mountain in the land called Sinai (or Tur Sinai). Sinai is a peninsula between Gulf of Suez and Gulf of Aqaba in the northeast of Egypt.
The book Partu'i az Qur'an cited from Farhang-i Mu'in, "the word Tur is not mentioned in the Torah or the Gospel and there was no such a name for a mountain before mentioning it by the Qur'an."
Merits and Benefits
In Majma' al-bayan, it is transmitted from the Prophet (s) that whoever recites Sura al-Tur, it is obliged upon God to keep him away from the punishment of Hell and place him in the Paradise.[7] It is also reported that the Prophet (s) recited Sura al-Tur in his maghrib prayer.[8] In other hadiths from Imam al-Baqir (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a), it is transmitted that whoever recites Sura al-Tur, God will give him the good of this world and the Hereafter.[9]
