He transmitted hadiths from Imam al-Kazim (a), and was a representative of Imam al-Rida (a) and Imam al-Jawad (a) in Qom. His grave is located in the Shaykhan Cemetery in Qom.
Genealogy
Abu Yahya[1] Zakariyya b. Adam was from the Ash'ari Family who had migrated from Kufa to Qom.[2] His father was Adam b. 'Abd Allah b. Sa'd al-Ash'ari[3] who is considered by al-Shaykh al-Tusi as a companion of Imam al-Sadiq (a).[4] There is a hadith from Imam al-Rida (a) transmitted by Zakariyya from his father, Adam b. 'Abd Allah.[5]
Zakariyya's brother, Ishaq b. Adam al-Ash'ari, transmitted hadiths from Imam al-Rida (a),[6] and his cousin, Zakariyya b. Idris, transmitted hadiths from Imam al-Sadiq (a), Imam al-Kazim (a), and Imam al-Rida (a).[7]
Companion of Imams
Imam al-Sadiq (a) and Imam al-Kazim (a)
According to al-Shaykh al-Tusi, Zakariyya was a companion of Imam al-Sadiq (a).[8] No source of rijal has mentioned him as a companion of Imam al-Kazim (a), but he did transmit hadiths from Imam al-Kazim (a).[9]
Imam al-Rida's (a) Representative
According to al-Shaykh al-Tusi, Zakariyya was a companion of Imam al-Rida (a) as well.[10] According to some hadiths, Imam al-Rida (a) told people to consult Zakariyya b. Adam in their religious questions and introduced him as a trustworthy person in mundane and religious questions.[11] He received judicial alms (al-wujuhat al-shar'iyya) from people of Qom on behalf of the Imam (a).[12] Zakariyya accompanied Imam al-Rida (a) in a hajj pilgrimage from Medina to Mecca.[13]
According to a hadith, he told Imam al-Rida (a): "I want to leave my household because there are many stupid, ignorant people among them". The Imam (a) said: "do not do this, because God removes all the catastrophes from your household (in another version: from people of Qom) because of your presence among them, just as he removed the catastrophes from people of Baghdad because of Abu l-Hasan al-Kazim (a)."[14]
Imam al-Jawad's (a) Representative
Zakariyya was also considered as a companion of Imam al-Jawad (a).[15] Given the account in Rijal al-Kashshi, Zakariyya was Imam al-Jawad's (a) representative in Qom.[16]
Work
He allegedly wrote a book and a collection of questions which have been transmitted through different chains of transmitters. The collection of questions apparently consisted of questions he had asked Imam al-Kazim (a).[17] He transmitted about 40 hadiths (mediately or immediately) from the Imams (a).[18]
Death
Zakariyya died in the period of Imam al-Jawad (a). After his death, the Imam (a) wrote in a letter:
- "May God bless him on the day he was born and the day he died and the day he will be resurrected to life. He lived throughout his life with awareness of, and commitment to, the truth, and practiced whatever was obliged by God and the Prophet (s). He—may God bless him—died while he neither broke a pledge nor changed a ruling. May God reward him for his (good) will and his efforts".[19]
His grave is located in Qom in Shaykhan Cemetery near the Shrine of Fatima al-Ma'suma (a).
