Salmasi Mosque (Persian: مسجد سَلْماسی) is a historic mosque situated in Qom, Iran. Located in close proximity to the former residence of Imam Khomeini, it is formally recognized as one of the designated endowments belonging to the Holy Shrine of Lady Fatima al-Ma'suma (a). The mosque acquired substantial historical prominence prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution of Iran, primarily functioning as the venue where Imam Khomeini delivered his seminal lectures on Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and Usul (principles of jurisprudence).

History

An inscription positioned on the mosque's portal indicates that its construction was finalized in 1947. The parcel of land upon which the mosque stands was donated by Muhammad Aqazadeh, a prominent merchant from Qom. The subsequent architectural development and construction phases were directed and financed by Yahya Salmasi, a native of Salmas, who is credited with erecting the present edifice.[1]

Architecture

Geographically, the Salmasi Mosque is located on Eram Street at the terminus of Aqazadeh (Salmasi) Alley, with its western façade oriented toward an adjoining thoroughfare. The structure is distinguished by an austere architectural design, purposefully devoid of the intricate ornamentation that typically characterizes similar religious sanctuaries. An epigraphic inscription affixed to the interior wall explicitly designates both the mosque and its associated subterranean water reservoir as inalienable endowments of the Holy Shrine of Lady Fatima al-Ma'suma (a). From its initial establishment until 2001, the edifice remained largely unaltered and underwent no significant structural renovations; however, during that year, comprehensive restoration efforts were executed under the auspices of the Endowments Administration.[2]

Place of Imam Khomeini's Teaching

The Salmasi Mosque cemented its enduring historical legacy when Imam Khomeini relocated his pedagogical sessions to its premises. Initially, these jurisprudential classes were convened in a more modest mosque adjacent to the Holy Shrine of Lady Fatima al-Ma'suma (a). Nevertheless, as spatial constraints intensified due to a rapidly expanding cohort of students, the Salmasi Mosque was selected as a more accommodating alternative venue. Following the passing of Ayatollah Burujirdi, Imam Khomeini's advanced seminars on Kharij al-Fiqh were ultimately transferred to the more expansive Grand Mosque of Qom.[3] Today, the mosque sustains its academic heritage by continuing to operate as an active center of religious instruction within the Seminary of Qom.

On September 6, 2004, the Salmasi Mosque, alongside its adjoining water reservoir, was formally inscribed on the List of National Monuments of Iran under the registration number 11098.[4]
