Munājāt al-muḥibbīn (Arabic: مُناجاتُ الْمُحِبّین, lit: the Whispered Prayer of the Lovers) is one of The Fifteen Whispered Prayers attributed to Imam al-Sajjad (a). It is narrated in al-Sahifa al-sajjadiyya al-thaniya, Bihar al-anwar, and Mafatih al-jinan. Allama al-Majlisi has mentioned that this supplication is to be recited on Saturdays.
Contents
In the first passage of this supplication, two points are mentioned: first, those who taste the love of God do not seek the love of anyone else; second, those who become intimate with God do not wish for nearness to the others.
Afterwards, the Imam (a) asks God to place him among those whom He has chosen for His nearness and friendship, which are acquired through obeying God and self-purification.
Yearning for meeting with God is considered in this prayer a result of God's love, which itself contributes to the growth of this love. Being pleased with God's decrees is considered another fruit of the love of God. "Gazing upon God's face" is said to be a gift bestowed by God upon these special servants.
Imam al-Sajjad (a) asks God to place him with those whom He has made pleased with His decree and has given refuge from separation from Himself, those whom He has occupied with obedience and chosen for whispered prayer to Himself, and those whose habit is rejoicing in God and yearning for Him.
The Imam (a) states that the light of God's holiness induces wonder in the eyes of His lovers and mentions that all the fruits of God's love are caused by His grace and unattainable without His will. The Imam (a) also asks God the love of His loved ones.
Text and Translation
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
My God, who can have tasted the sweetness of Your love, |
then wanted another in place of You? |
Who can have become intimate with Your nearness, |
then sought removal from You? |
My God, place us with him whom You have chosen for Your nearness and Your friendship, |
purified through Your affection and Your love, | وَأَخْلَصْتَه لِوُدّ ِكَ وَمَحَبَّتِكَ، |
given yearning for the meeting with You, | وَشَوَّقْتَهُ إِلىٰ لِقَائِكَ، |
made pleased with Your decree, | وَرَضَّيْتَهُ بِقَضائِكَ، |
granted gazing upon Your face, | وَمَنَحْتَهُ بِالنَّظَرِ إلىٰ وَجْهِكَ، |
shown the favour of Your good pleasure, | وَحَبَوْتَهُ بِرِضاكَ، |
given refuge from separation from You and Your loathing, | وَأَعَدْتَهُ مِنْ هَجْرِكَ وَقِلاكَ، |
settled in a sure sitting place in Your neighbourhood, | وَبَوَّأْتَهُ مَقْعَدَ الصّـِدْقِ فِي جَوارِكَ، |
singled out for true knowledge of You, | وَخَصَصْتَهُ بِمَعْرِفَتِكَ، |
made worthy for worship of You, | وَأَهَّلْتَهُ لِعِبادَتِكَ، |
whose heart You have captivated with Your will, | وَهَيَّمْتَ قَلْبَهُ لِإِرادَتِكَ، |
whom You have picked for contemplating You, | وَاجْتَبَيْتَهُ لِمُشاهَدَتِكَ، |
whose look You have made empty for You, | وَأَخْلَيْتَ وَجْهَهُ لَكَ، |
whose breast You have freed for Your love, | وَفَرَّغْتَ فُؤادَهُ لِحُبّـِكَ، |
whom You have made desirous of what is with You, | وَرَغَّبْتَهُ فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ، |
inspired with Your remembrance, | وَأَلْهَمْتَهُ ذِكْرَكَ، |
allotted thanksgiving to You, | وَأَوْزَعْتَهُ شُكْرَكَ، |
occupied with obeying You, | وَشَغَلْتَهُ بِطاعَتِكَ، |
turned into one of Your righteous creatures, | وَصَيَّرْتَهُ مِنْ صالِحِي بَرِيَّتِكَ، |
chosen for whispered prayer to You, | وَاخْتَرْتَهُ لِمُناجاتِكَ، |
and from whom You have cut off all things which cut him off from You! |
O God, place us among those whose habit is rejoicing in You and yearning for You, | اَللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ دَأْبُهُمُ الارْتِياحُ إلَيْكَ وَالْحَنِينُ، |
whose time is spent in sighing and moaning!
Their foreheads are bowed down before Your mightiness, |
their eyes wakeful in Your service, | وَعُيُونُهُمْ ساهِرَةٌ فِي خِدْمَتِكَ، |
their tears flowing in dread of You, | وَدُمُوُعُهُمْ سائِلَةٌ مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ، |
their hearts fixed upon Your love, | وَقُلُوبُهُمْ مُتَعَلّـِقَةٌ بِمَحَبَّتِكَ، |
their cores shaken with awe of You.
O He the lights of whose holiness induce wonder in the eyes of His lovers, |
the glories of whose face arouse the longing of the hearts of His knowers!
O Furthest Wish of the hearts of the yearners! |
O Utmost Limit of the hopes of the lovers! |
I ask from You love for You, love for those who love You, | أَسْأَلُكَ حُبَّكَ وَحُبَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّكَ، |
love for every work which will join me to Your nearness, | وَحُبَّ كُلّ ِ عَمَلٍ يُوصِلُنِي إلىٰ قُرْبِكَ، |
and that You make Yourself more beloved to me than anything other than You | وَأَنْ تَجْعَلَكَ أَحَبَّ إلَيَّ مِمَّا سِواكَ |
and make my love for You lead to Your good pleasure, | وَأَنْ تَجْعَلَ حُبّـِي إيَّاكَ قائِداً إلىٰ رِضْوانِكَ، |
and my yearning for You protect against disobeying You!
Oblige me by allowing me to gaze upon You, | وَامْنُنْ بِالنَّظَرِ إلَيْكَ عَلَيَّ، |
gaze upon me with the eye of affection and tenderness, | وَانْظُرْ بِعَيْنِ الْوُدّ ِ وَالْعَطْفِ إلَيَّ، |
turn not Your face away from me, | وَلا تَصْرِفْ عَنّـِي وَجْهَكَ، |
and make me one of the people of happiness with You and favoured position!
O Responder, |
O Most Merciful of the merciful! | |
