TimeAt the time of breaking the fast

The Iftar Supplication is a prayer attributed to the Prophet (s)[1] and Imam Ali (a), recited at the time of breaking the fast.[2] In this supplication, the worshipper addresses God, affirming that the fast was observed solely for Him and that the breaking of the fast is done with His provision.[3] This is followed by a plea for the acceptance of this act of worship.[4] According to some hadith commentators, the supplication signifies that the fast was undertaken with sincerity for God alone, and since He is the sole provider of sustenance, He alone should be worshiped.[5]

This supplication is mentioned in hadith sources under the recommended acts of the month of Ramadan. However, the hadiths that transmit it do not restrict its recitation to this month.[6] According to the hadiths, after reciting this supplication, the Prophet (s) would say: "Thirst and the hardship of fasting have passed, but its reward remains."[7] In some accounts, the supplication is attributed to Imam Ali (a) and begins with the phrase Bismillah.[8]

This supplication is also narrated from Imam al-Rida (a), with slightly longer and more detailed wording.[9] Another similar supplication for the time of iftar is transmitted by Imam al-Kazim (a) from the Prophet (s). Regarding the divine reward for reciting this supplication, it is stated that whoever recites this supplication will receive a reward equivalent to that of all those who fasted on that day.[10] The text of the supplication is as follows: "O God, I have fasted solely for You, I have broken my fast with Your provision, and I have placed my trust in You alone."[11]
