Hal min nāṣirin yanṣurunī (Arabic: هَلْ مِنْ ناصِرٍ یَنْصُرُنی, literally: "Is there any helper to help me?") is a famous sentence attributed to Imam al-Husayn (a) in the last minutes of his life on the Day of Ashura. According to Jawad Muhaddithi in the book Farhang-i Ashura, this sentence is a paraphrased quotation and does not appear in historical books in this exact form;[1] however, sources regarding the Event of Karbala have cited phrases similar to it with the same content.[2]
According to the chroniclers of Ashura, when the companions of Imam al-Husayn (a) were martyred and he was left alone, he uttered these sentences: "Hal min dhābbin yadhubbu ʿan ḥaram-i Rasūl Allāh? Hal min muwaḥḥidin yakhāfu Allāha fīnā? Hal min mughīthin yarjū Allāha bi-ighāthatinā? Hal min muʿīnin yarjū mā ʿind Allāh fī iʿānatinā?" (Is there any defender to defend the Harem [family/sanctuary] of the Messenger of God? Is there any monotheist who fears God regarding us? Is there any succorer who hopes for God in coming to our aid? Is there any helper who hopes for what is with God in helping us?).[3]
Prior to this, at the encampment of Bani Muqatil, when Imam al-Husayn (a) asked Ubayd Allah b. al-Hurr al-Ju'fi for help and he made excuses, the Imam asked 'Ubayd Allah to leave that place because if he heard the voice of the Imam's call for help (istighatha) and did not answer, God would destroy him.[4] Some consider the slogan "Labbayk ya Husayn" (Here I am, O Husayn) to be a response to Imam al-Husayn's call for help on the Day of Ashura.[5]
