In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
By the Dawn, (1) |
by the ten nights, (2) | وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ ﴿٢﴾ |
by the Even and the Odd, (3) | وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ ﴿٣﴾ |
by the night when it departs!
Is there an oath in that for one possessing intellect? (5) |
Have you not regarded how your Lord dealt with [the people of] ʿĀd,(6) |
[and] Iram, [the city] of the pillars, (7) | إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ ﴿٧﴾ |
the like of which was not created among cities, (8) | الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ ﴿٨﴾ |
and [the people of] Thamūd, who hollowed out the rocks in the valley, (9) | وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ ﴿٩﴾ |
and Pharaoh, the impaler,(10) | وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِي الْأَوْتَادِ ﴿١٠﴾ |
—those who rebelled [against Allah] in their cities (11) | الَّذِينَ طَغَوْا فِي الْبِلَادِ ﴿١١﴾ |
and caused much corruption in them, (12) | فَأَكْثَرُوا فِيهَا الْفَسَادَ ﴿١٢﴾ |
so your Lord poured on them lashes of punishment.
Indeed your Lord is in ambush. (14) |
As for man, whenever his Lord tests him and grants him honour and blesses him, he says, ‘My Lord has honoured me.’
But when He tests him and tightens for him his provision, he says, ‘My Lord has humiliated me.’
No indeed! Rather you do not honour the orphan,(17) |
and do not urge the feeding of the needy, (18) | وَلَا تَحَاضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ ﴿١٨﴾ |
and you eat the inheritance rapaciously, (19) | وَتَأْكُلُونَ التُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا ﴿١٩﴾ |
and you love wealth with much fondness.
No indeed! When the earth is levelled to a plain,(21) |
and your Lord and the angels arrive in ranks, (22) | وَجَاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا ﴿٢٢﴾ |
the day when hell is brought [near], on that day man will take admonition but what will the admonition avail him?
He will say, ‘Alas, had I sent ahead for my life!’
On that day none shall punish as He punishes, (25) |
and none shall bind as He binds.(26) | وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُ أَحَدٌ ﴿٢٦﴾ |
‘O soul at peace! (27) |
Return to your Lord, pleased, pleasing! (28) |
Then enter among My servants! (29) |
And enter My paradise!’ (30)[1] |
