This is the text of al-Ma'arij. For the related article see Sura al-Ma'arij. |
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. |
An asker asked for a punishment bound to befall (1) |
—which none can avert from the faithless—[1] (2) | لِلكافِرينَ لَيسَ لَهُ دافِعٌ(٢) |
from Allah, Lord of the lofty stations.
The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a day whose span is fifty thousand years.
So be patient, with a patience that is graceful. (5) |
Indeed they see it to be far off, (6) | إِنَّهُم يَرَونَهُ بَعيدًا(٦) |
and We see it to be near.
The day when the sky will be like molten copper, (8) |
and the mountains like [tufts of] dyed wool, (9) | وَتَكونُ الجِبالُ كَالعِهنِ(٩) |
and no friend will inquire about [the welfare of his] friend,(10) | وَلا يَسأَلُ حَميمٌ حَميمًا(١٠) |
[though] they will be placed within each other’s sight. The guilty one will wish he could ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children, (11) | يُبَصَّرونَهُم ۚ يَوَدُّ المُجرِمُ لَو يَفتَدي مِن عَذابِ يَومِئِذٍ بِبَنيهِ(١١) |
his spouse and his brother, (12) | وَصاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخيهِ(١٢) |
his kin which had sheltered him (13) | وَفَصيلَتِهِ الَّتي تُؤويهِ(١٣) |
and all those who are upon the earth, if that might deliver him.
Never! Indeed it is a blazing fire, (15) |
which strips away the scalp.
It invites him who has turned back [from the truth] and forsaken [it], (17) | تَدعو مَن أَدبَرَ وَتَوَلّىٰ(١٧) |
amassing [wealth] and hoarding [it].
Indeed man has been created covetous: (19) |
anxious when an ill befalls him (20) | إِذا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزوعًا(٢٠) |
and grudging when good comes his way (21) | وَإِذا مَسَّهُ الخَيرُ مَنوعًا(٢١) |
—[all are such] except the prayerful, (22) | إِلَّا المُصَلّينَ(٢٢) |
those who are persevering in their prayers (23) | الَّذينَ هُم عَلىٰ صَلاتِهِم دائِمونَ(٢٣) |
and in whose wealth there is a known right (24) | وَالَّذينَ في أَموالِهِم حَقٌّ مَعلومٌ(٢٤) |
for the beggar and the deprived, (25) | لِلسّائِلِ وَالمَحرومِ(٢٥) |
and who affirm the Day of Retribution, (26) | وَالَّذينَ يُصَدِّقونَ بِيَومِ الدّينِ(٢٦) |
and those who are apprehensive of the punishment of their Lord (27) | وَالَّذينَ هُم مِن عَذابِ رَبِّهِم مُشفِقونَ(٢٧) |
(there is indeed no security from the punishment of their Lord) (28) | إِنَّ عَذابَ رَبِّهِم غَيرُ مَأمونٍ(٢٨) |
and those who guard their private parts (29) | وَالَّذينَ هُم لِفُروجِهِم حافِظونَ(٢٩) |
(except from their spouses and their slave women, for then they are not blameworthy; (30) | إِلّا عَلىٰ أَزواجِهِم أَو ما مَلَكَت أَيمانُهُم فَإِنَّهُم غَيرُ مَلومينَ(٣٠) |
but whoever seeks beyond that—it is they who are the transgressors) (31) | فَمَنِ ابتَغىٰ وَراءَ ذٰلِكَ فَأُولٰئِكَ هُمُ العادونَ(٣١) |
and those who keep their trusts and covenants, (32) | وَالَّذينَ هُم لِأَماناتِهِم وَعَهدِهِم راعونَ(٣٢) |
and those who are observant of their testimonies, (33) | وَالَّذينَ هُم بِشَهاداتِهِم قائِمونَ(٣٣) |
and those who are watchful of their prayers.
They will be in gardens, held in honour. (35) |
What is the matter with the faithless that they scramble toward you (36) | فَمالِ الَّذينَ كَفَروا قِبَلَكَ مُهطِعينَ(٣٦) |
from the left and the right in batches?
Does each man among them hope to enter the garden of bliss? (38) |
Never!
Indeed We created them from what they know.[2] (39) |
So I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests that We are able (40) |
to replace them by [others] better than them and We are not to be outmaneuvered.
So leave them to gossip and play until they encounter their day, which they are promised: (42) |
the day when they emerge from the graves, hastening, as if racing toward a target, (43) | يَومَ يَخرُجونَ مِنَ الأَجداثِ سِراعًا كَأَنَّهُم إِلىٰ نُصُبٍ يوفِضونَ(٤٣) |
with a humbled look [in their eyes], overcast by abasement. That is the day they had been promised.[3] (44) | خاشِعَةً أَبصارُهُم تَرهَقُهُم ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذٰلِكَ اليَومُ الَّذي كانوا يوعَدونَ(٤٤) |

- ↑ Or ‘bound to befall the faithless—which none can avert—from Allah…’
- ↑ That is, from a drop of sperm.
