Abu l-Qāsim Jaʿfar b. Ḥusayn al-Khwānsārī (Arabic: ابوالقاسم جعفر بن حسين الخوانساري) (b.1163/1749-50 - d.1240/1824-5) also known as Aqa Mīrzā and al-Mīr al-Ṣaghīr, the twelver jurist of 12th/16th - 13th/17th centuries. In addition to his studies under his father, he was one of the special students of Abu l-Qasim al-Khatunabadi. He received a permission for hadith transmission from al-Sayyid Muhammad Mahdi Bahr al-'Ulum.

The treatise Lubs al-Harir al-Mahd Li l-Nisa' Halat al-Salat wa al-'Ihram and glosses on several traditional and jurisprudential books has remained from him. Sayyid Muhammad Baqir Khwansari –author of Rawdat al-jannat- is one of his descendants.

Al-Khwansari was very cautious about religious matters. People attributed wonders to him. Finally he passed away in 1240/1824-5 in Khwansar and was buried there.

Birth and Father

He was born in 1163/1750 in Khwansar.[1] His father was al-Sayyid Husayn and his grandfather was Abu l-Qasim Ja'far b. Husayn al-Khwansari known as al-Mir al-Kabir who was a famous scholar.[2]

Education

At first, Abu l-Qasim studied under his father, then he went to Isfahan and studied high levels of jurisprudence and principles of jurisprudence under the city's scholars.

Teachers

In addition to studying under his father, he was one of the pupils of Abu l-Qasim al-Khatunabadi –known as Mudarris-. After finishing his studies, he returned to Khwansar.

He received permission for hadith transmission from his father and also from these scholars:

His son Sayyid Zayn al-Abidin Khawnsari studied under him and received permission for hadith transmission from him.[3]

Virtues

Al-Khwansari was very cautious in religious matters, thus he did not accept the position of being a judge and being imam of congregational prayer or issuing fatwa. He was very devout and people attributed acts of wonder to him.[5]

Also, his children and descendants were scholars and well-educated. He is the paternal grandfather of Sayyid Muhammad Baqir Khwansari –author of Rawdat al-jannat.

Demise

Al-Khwansari passed away in 1240/1824 in Khwansar and was buried in the cemetery which is located behind the old bazaar of Khwansar.[6]
