Kull yawm ʿĀshūrāʾ wa kull arḍ Karbalā (Arabic: کُلُّ یَومٍ عاشورا و کُلُّ أرضٍ کَربَلا), meaning "every day is 'Ashura and every land is Karbala", is a famous phrase which some has been attributed to Imam al-Sadiq (a) and some scholars have used it in their speeches. According to some researchers, this sentence has not been mentioned in Shia hadith sources.

History of the Usage

It is not clear who has used this phrase for the first time. In his Husayn, warith-i Adam (Husayn, the inheritor of Adam), Ali Shari'ati attributed it to Imam al-Sadiq (a).[1] This phrase has also been used by some religious scholars. Imam Khomeini has used this phrase in his speeches and messages.[2] Ayatollah Khamene'i has also mentioned it in his speech without regarding it as hadith,[3] like Murtada Mutahhari has also used it, but he did not mention whether it is a hadith or not.[4]

Reference

Some researchers believe that not only this phrase has not been mentioned in hadiths, but it is also opposite to Shia beliefs; because no land has the same value as Karbala and no day is comparable to 'Ashura[5] and it seems that this phrase has a Zaydi origin and cannot have any relation with Twelver Shia.

Interpretation

With the usage of this phrase in his speeches, Imam Khomeini did not mean the necessity of crying over the hardships of Imam al-Husayn (a); but he deemed that this phrase implies the constant battle with oppression,[6] although he has interpreted it differently in other occasions.[7]

Murtada Mutahhari, explaining the meaning of the victory of Imam al-Husayn (a) in his movement against Yazid, says that this movement is continuously gaining victory and the meaning of "every day is 'Ashura" is that being every day there is a fight against oppression and a revival of right and justice in the name of Imam al-Husayn (a).[8] Ayatollah Khamene'i interprets this phrase that "in every period, people have duties that if they fulfill them well and on time, everything will become alright, nations will promote and humanity will develop."[9]
