Zīyāra Prayer (Arabic:صَلاة الزيارَة) is a recommended prayer performed during the ziyara of the Infallibles (a). Reciting Sura Ya-Sin in the first rak'a and Sura al-Rahman in the second rak'a after Sura al-Fatiha has been recommended.

Shaykh 'Abbas Qummi, in Mafatih al-jinan, has considered the Prophet's (a) shrine the best place for performing his ziyara prayer and for other Infallibles (a) above the place of their heads in the grave. According to the fatwa of the marja's, it is forbidden that a person performs the ziyara prayer with his back to the grave, if it is considered disrespectful to the Infallible (a) in the view of common people.

In hadiths, for non-infallible ones, no prayer has been mentioned as ziyara prayer. Therefore, it is not correct to perform such a prayer with the intention of ziyara prayer. However, after performing ziyara, the person can perform a recommended prayer and gift its reward to the soul of the buried person.

Method of performing the ziyara prayer

Ziyara prayer is a two-rak'a prayer performed during the ziyara of the Infallibles (a).[1] If the recitation of a specific sura is not specified in a ziyara prayer, it is better to recite Sura Ya-Sin in the first rak'a and Sura al-Rahman in the second rak'a.[2]

In the ziyara of the Noble Prophet (s) from a distance, it is instructed to perform four rak'as for the ziyara prayer (two prayers each having two rak'as).[3] For the ziyara of other Infallibles (a) from a distance, one can perform several two-rak'a prayers.[4]

Some jurists believe that if the ziyara is performed near the graves of the Infallibles (a), the ziyara prayer should be performed after the ziyara. If the ziyara is performed from a distance, the prayer should precede the ziyara.[5]

The Best Place for Ziyara Prayer

Shaykh 'Abbas Qummi in Mafatih al-jinan has stated that the best place for performing the ziyara prayer of the Noble Prophet (s) is Rawdat al-Nabi (s) in his shrine and for other Infallibles (a), the area above the place of their heads in the grave.[6] According to the fatwa of marja's, it is forbidden that a person performs the ziyara prayer with his back to the grave if it is considered disrespectful to the Infallible (a) in the view of common people.[7]

Ziyara Prayer of the Children of Imams (a)

In hadiths, there is no mention of ziyara prayer for non-Infallible ones. However, it has been said that after performing the ziyara, the person can perform a recommended prayer and gift its reward to the soul of the buried person.

Ziyara prayer by proxy

Recommended ziyara and ziyara prayer can be performed on behalf of the living and the deceased.[8] It is also possible to perform ziyara and ziyara prayer on behalf of everyone or for each person individually.[9] According to some hadiths, the reward of recommended deeds performed on behalf of others is recorded both for the person himself and the person on behalf of whom those deeds have been performed, without any decrease for the one who performs the prayer.[10]
