Abū ʿAbd Allāh (Arabic: ابوعبدالله) is the Teknonym of Imam al-Husayn (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a). In the Arabic culture, teknonyms are used to show respect toward people. In hadiths from Imams (a), their teknonyms are mentioned. In the books of hadith, when "Abu Abd Allah" is mentioned without the original name [i.e. "al-Husayn"], it refers to Imam al-Sadiq (a).

Teknonym in the Arabic Culture

In the Arabic culture, teknonym is a name other than a person's first name, used to show respect toward him. Teknonyms usually begin with "Abu", "Aba" and "Abi" (meaning "father") and "Umm" (meaning "mother"); such as, "Abu l-Hasan", "Aba l-Qasim", "Abi Bakr" and "Umm Kulthum".[1]

Common teknonyms of Imams (a)

In most hadiths, Imams (a) are mentioned with their teknonyms.[2] Most teknonyms of Imams (a) are common among them.[3] For example, the teknonym "Abu Ja'far" is common between Imam al-Baqir (a) and Imam al-Jawad (a). Also, four Imams (a) are called with the teknonym "Abu l-Hasan": Imam Ali (a), Imam al-Kazim (a), Imam al-Rida (a) and Imam al-Hadi (a).

Teknonym "Aba Abd Allah"

Teknonym "Aba Abd Allah" is used as "Abu Abd Allah" and "Abi Abd Allah" as well in Arabic, and it is common between Imam al-Husayn (a) and Imam al-Sadiq (a).[4] According to the book, Tazallum al-Zahra' (a), the Prophet (s) called Imam al-Husayn (a), "Aba Abd Allah".[5] That Imam al-Sadiq (a) too received the teknonym "Aba Abd Allah" was because of his second son Abd Allah al-Aftah.[6]

In the books of hadith, there are not many hadiths transmitted from Imam al-Husayn (a).[7] On the opposite, many hadiths of Shi'a are transmitted from Imam al-Sadiq (a),[8] Therefore, in hadith sources, the teknonym "Aba Abd Allah" is used more about Imam al-Sadiq (a); and when they say "Aba Abd Allah", they mean Imam al-Sadiq (a).[9]
