Name
'Amr was in the army of 'Umar b. Sa'd in the Battle of Karbala. He is variously mentioned in sources as 'Amr b. Subayh al-Madhhiji,[1] 'Amr b. Subayh al-Saydawi,[2] and 'Amr b. Subayh al-Sada'i.[3]
Battle of 'Ashura
According to sources, on the Day of 'Ashura, he threw an arrow with which he pinned 'Abd Allah b. Muslim b. 'Aqil's hand to his forehead.[4] There is a disagreement about whether it was 'Amr who martyred 'Abd Allah or someone else. 'Amr was one of the ten cavalries who ran over the corpse of Imam al-Husayn (a) in the afternoon of 'Ashura at the command of 'Umar b. Sa'd and broke the Imam's (a) back.[5]
He is cursed in Ziyarah al-Shuhada' as the murderer of 'Abd Allah b. Muslim b. 'Aqil.[6]
Death
In the Uprising of al-Mukhtar in 66/685, 'Amr was arrested overnight while he was asleep on the roof of his house, his sword being under his head. He was taken to al-Mukhtar. 'Amr hit his hand to 'Abd Allah b. Kamil's eye who was standing beside him. He was hit with spears at the command of al-Mukhtar until he died.[7]
