Bāb al-Thuʿbān (Arabic: بابُ الثُّعبان) or Bāb al-Fīl (Arabic: بابُ الفیل) or Bāb al-Raʾīsa (Arabic: باب الرئیسة)[1] is one of the northern gates of the Mosque of Kufa[2] named after an event related to Imam Ali (a).

According to al-Shaykh al-Mufid (d. 413/1022) in al-Irshad, during a sermon of Imam Ali (a) in the Mosque of Kufa, a large snake (Arabic: thu'ban) appeared on the Minbar. The Imam spoke to the snake, and by answering its question, he revealed its identity as a ruler of the Jinns and prevented people from killing it.[3] This event caused the people of Kufa to call this gate Bab al-Thu'ban.[4] However, regarding the details of this event, different narrations have been quoted in Manaqib Al Abi Talib,[5] Madinat al-ma'ajiz,[6] and Mashariq anwar al-yaqin.[7]

This report has also been mentioned as a virtue for Imam Ali (a) in books such as Minhaj al-karama by al-'Allama al-Hilli[8] and Ihqaq al-haqq by Qadi Nur Allah Shushtari.[9] According to Fadl b. Hasan al-Tabrisi (d. 548/1153), Mu'awiya b. Abi Sufyan ordered an elephant (Arabic:fil) to be placed next to the gate so that this virtue of 'Ali (a) would be forgotten and the name of the gate would change to Bab al-Fil.[10]
