Year of Imam Ali (a)

Year of Imam 'Ali (a) (Persian: سال امام علی علیهالسلام) refers to the designation assigned by Sayyid Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, to the solar year 1379 SH (corresponding to March 2000 – March 2001).[1] This title was selected because the year coincided with two Eid al-Ghadir observances, marking both the beginning and the end of the calendar year.[2]
The primary objectives of this designation were to encourage the general public—particularly the youth and the elite—to adopt Imam 'Ali (a) as a role model in various spheres of life, and to urge officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran to emulate his style of governance.[3] Additionally, the initiative aimed to foster the realization of social justice within Iranian-Islamic society.[4]
During the Year of Imam 'Ali (a), numerous cultural activities were organized to align with the year's theme. Notable initiatives included the compilation of the Encyclopedia of Amir al-Mu'minin,[5] the issuance of a commemorative stamp honoring Imam 'Ali (a) by the Post Office of the Islamic Republic of Iran,[6] and the authorship of the play Majlis-i zarbat-zadan by Bahram Beyza'i.[7]
The tradition of naming years in Iran, initiated by the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, began in the solar year 1378 SH (1999–2000) with the designation of the Year of Imam Khomeini. Other significant designations during this period included the Year of Husayni Dignity and Pride (2002–2003)—named because the month of Muharram occurred twice within that solar year—and the naming of the year 2006–2007 after the Great Prophet (s).[8]
