Abū Burda b. ʿAwf al-Azdī (Arabic: أبوبُردَة بن عَوف الأَزُدي) is listed among the Companions of Imam 'Ali (a).[1] However, certain scholars classify him as one of the deviant companions and hypocrites opposed to Imam 'Ali (a).[2] According to Waq'at Siffin, Abu Burda was one of the notables of Kufa whom Imam 'Ali (a) admonished for their lack of insight.[3] Other reports document his evasion of military service and the Imam's subsequent displeasure with his justifications.[4]
Historical sources indicate that following the Martyrdom of Imam 'Ali (a), Abu Burda encouraged his associates to join the army of Mu'awiya b. Abi Sufyan.[5] In al-Irshad, Al-Shaykh al-Mufid identifies him as one of the individuals ordered by Ibn Ziyad to transport the heads of the Martyrs of Karbala from Kufa to Damascus.[6]
Abu Burda hailed from Yemen and belonged to the Azd tribe.[7] He was reportedly an initial supporter of 'Uthman b. 'Affan[8] and fought against Imam 'Ali (a) in the Battle of Jamal; however, he defected to the Imam's army after being persuaded by his arguments.[9] He is also recorded as having served in Imam 'Ali's (a) army during the Battle of Siffin.[10]
