Hammām (Arabic: هَمَّام) was a devout ascetic[1] counted among the dedicated followers (Shi'a) of Imam Ali (a)[2] and the Ashab al-Burnus (ascetics distinguished by their woolen caps).[3] He petitioned Imam Ali (a) to delineate the characteristics of the God-fearing (Muttaqin). Although the Imam initially provided a brief response, Hammam's persistence led to the delivery of the renowned Sermon of the Pious (Khutba al-Muttaqin), which details approximately one hundred attributes of the pious.[4]

Historical accounts state that Hammam swooned and passed away, overwhelmed by the profundity of this sermon.[5] Imam Ali (a) personally performed the ritual washing (ghusl) of his body,[6] attended his funeral, and led the funeral prayer (prayer) over him.[7]

Scholarly opinion regarding Hammam's lineage is divided. The Shi'a scholar Muhammad b. Ali al-Karajaki (d. 449/1057-58) identifies him as the son of 'Ubada b. Khaytham and the nephew of Rabi' b. Khaytham.[8] Conversely, Ibn Abi l-Hadid, in his Sharh Nahj al-balagha, records his lineage as the son of Shurayh b. Yazid.[9]

Al-Karajaki cites Hammam's address to Imam Ali (a)—"O Commander of the Faithful! By the God who honored you, the family of the Prophet (s), and chose you and preferred you..."—as a testament to his profound devotion to the Ahl al-Bayt (a).[10]
