Qasr Banī Muqātil (Arabic: قصر بني مُقاتِل) or Qasr Muqātil (Arabic: قصر مُقاتِل) is one of the way stations near Kufa. In the Event of Karbala, after 'Udhayb al-Hijanat, Imam al-Husayn (a) stayed there and then went toward Naynawa at night. There, Imam al-Husayn (a) asked 'Ubayd Allah b. al-Hurr al-Ju'fi and 'Amr b. Qays al-Mashriqi to join him, but they did not accept.

Cause of Naming

There were key structures in the early Islamic expansion called 'desert castles'. They resemble Roman forts. Qasr Bani Muqatil is considered to be an example. It has been a palace that belonged to Muqatil b. Hassan b. Tha'laba.[1] This station is between 'Ayn al-Tamar and Syria, near Qatqatana.[2] After 'Udhayb al-Hajanat, Imam al-Husayn (a) went there.[3] He (a) moved towards Naynawa from Qasr Bani Muqatil.[4]

Events

In Qasr Bani Muqatil, Imam al-Husayn (a) sent (a person reported as to be) al-Hajjaj b. Masruq[5] to the tent of 'Ubayd Allah b. al-Hurr al-Ju'fi and asked him to come to visit Imam (a). But 'Ubayd Allah refused and after reciting the Istirja' Verse said, "I cannot help him, and I neither want to see him nor want him to see me. Imam al-Husayn (a) went to his tent himself and called him for help, but 'Ubayd Allah refused. He gave his horse to Imam (a), but Imam (a) did not accept it.[6]

In some sources, there is a report about visiting 'Amr b. Qays al-Mashriqi and his cousin with Imam al-Husayn (a). They also refused to help Imam (a), and Imam (a) ordered them to go away from there so that they do not hear Imam's (a) call for help.[7]

According to 'Uqbat b. Sam'an, at night, Imam al-Husayn (a) moved towards Naynawa from Qasr Bani Muqatil. Near this place, Imam (a) went asleep on the saddle of his horse. After he (a) was awake, he (a) recited the Istirja' Verse and based on the dream he (a) saw, he (a) informed about killing of himself and his companions. The famous saying of 'Ali al-Akbar (a) that, "when we are right, we do not fear death" is said here.[8] Some sources have related this dream of Imam al-Husayn (a) and his conversation with 'Ali al-Akbar (a) to the station of Tha'labiyya.[9]

Conversation of Imam al-Husayn (a) with 'Ubayd Allah b. al-Hurr al-Ju'fi

Imam al-Husayn (a) asked 'Ubayd Allah b. al-Hurr al-Ju'fi to join him.

'Ubayd Allah b. al-Hurr al-Ju'fi said, "By God I swear that I know anyone who accompanies you will reach happiness in the hereafter, but I do not have hope to be able to do anything for you. I do not know any help for you in Kufa either. I ask you by God not to force me upon this, because I do not want to die soon, but this horse of mine whose name is Mulhaqa can be yours."[10]

Imam al-Husayn (a) said, "Now that you refuse to help us, we don't need your horse either.[11] So, if you do not help us, do not join those who fight with us. By God I swear that if someone hears our call and do not help us will be damned."[12]

'Ubayd Allah b. al-Hurr al-Ju'fi said, "I will never rise against you."
