Umm Wahb bt. 'Abd (Arabic:أُمّ وَهب بنت عَبد) (martyred 61/680) was the wife of 'Abd Allah b. 'Umayr al-Kalbi and among the martyrs of Karbala. She went from Kufa to Karbala at night with her husband and joined the companions of Imam al-Husayn (a). On the Day of 'Ashura, when the husband of Umm Wahb went to the battlefield, she also wanted to go, but Imam al-Husayn (a) did not allow her. When her husband was martyred, she was wiping blood off his face when Rustam, slave of Shimr b. Dhi l-Jawshan killed her. Some authors have identified her as the mother of Wahb b. Wahb. However, the reports indicate that she was not his mother.
Lineage
Umm Wahb was daughter of 'Abd from the clan of Nimr b. Qasit who lived in Kufa.[1] Her husband, 'Abd Allah b. 'Umayr who was among the martyrs of Karbala.[2] Some authors have identified her as the mother of Wahb b. Wahb. However, comparison of different sources and reports about the Battle of Ashura indicate that his mother was another woman.[3]
In the Battle of 'Ashura
Before the Battle of 'Ashura, Umm Wahb went from Kufa to Karbala at night with her husband and joined the companions of Imam al-Husayn (a).[4]
On the day of 'Ashura, when her husband went to the battlefield, she also picked a stick and wanted to go to the battlefield, but Imam (a) did not give her permission and said that jihad is not obligatory for women.[5] After her husband was martyred, she went to the battlefield and began wiping the blood off her husband’s face. Shimr sent his slave, Rustam, towards her and he hit an iron club at Umm Wahb's head and she was martyred.[6]
