'Aqil, he joined the caravan of Imam (a) and was martyred on the Day of 'Ashura.
Name and Lineage
His name has been mentioned as 'Abd al-Rahman al-Kudari,[1] 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Abd Allah al-Arhabi,[2] and 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Ubayd al-Arhabi.[3] His name is mentioned in Ziyarah al-Nahiya al-Muqaddasa as 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Abd Allah b. al-Kudari al-Arhabi[4] and has been greeted in Ziyarah al-Rajabiyya of Imam al-Husayn (a) as 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Abd Allah al-Adhri.
'Abd al-Rahman was son of 'Abd Allah al-Arhabi. Arhab was one of the famous branches of the Shi'a tribe of Banu Hamdan.[5]
'Abd al-Rahman was among the followers of Imam Ali (a)[6] and companions of Imam al-Husayn (a).[7] He was a brave man and influential in Kufa.[8]
Delivering the Letters of the People of Kufa
When the people of Kufa were informed that Imam (a) did not give allegiance to Yazid and went to Mecca, wrote letters to Imam (a). 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Abd Allah and Qays b. Mushir were among those who were sent by the people of Kufa with fifty-three letters,[9] as another report says, 153 letters or according to al-Akhbar al-tiwal fifty letters[10] to Imam al-Husayn (a). The content of all these letters was inviting Imam (a) to go to Kufa.
They entered Mecca on the Ramadan 12 or 10, 60/June 16 or 14, 680[11] and met with other delegates of Iraq who had brought letters for Imam (a) and delivered the letters to Imam (a).[12]
However, according to a report, 'Abd al-Rahman and more than 150 other people came from Kufa, and each delivered two to four letters to Imam (a).[13]
Companionship of Muslim in Going to Kufa
In response to the letters of the people of Kufa, Imam al-Husayn (a) sent Muslim b. 'Aqil with Qays b. Mushir al-Saydawi, 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Abd Allah, and 'Umarat b. 'Ubayd al-Saluli to Kufa.[14] After Muslim b. 'Aqil was martyred, 'Abd al-Rahman exited Kufa secretly and joined the caravan of Imam al-Husayn (a).[15]
Presence in Karbala and Martyrdom
On the Day of 'Ashura, 'Abd al-Rahman asked for permission from Imam al-Husayn (a) and went to the battlefield.[16] After he killed and injured some of the soldiers of the army of Kufa, he was martyred. He is considered among the martyrs of the first attack of the enemy.[17] Banu Asad buried his body together with other martyrs of Karbala in the collective grave of the martyrs.
