The Prayer of the Prophet (s) (Arabic: صلاة النبي) is a two-Rak'a recommended prayer attributed to the Prophet (s). It is recommended for forgiveness of sins and the fulfillment of needs. The characteristic of this prayer is reciting Qur'an 97:15 times in different positions (210 times in total). A specific supplication is recited after finishing the prayer.

This prayer can be performed at any time of the day or night and is not limited to a specific time.

Importance

The Prayer of the Prophet (s) is a well-known prayer mentioned by both Shi'a and Sunni scholars in their books.[1] Sayyid b. Tawus in the book Jamal al-usbu', narrates a narration from Imam al-Rida (a) in which a person asks about the Ja'far al-Tayyar Prayer. In response, the Imam (a) recommends the Prayer of the Prophet (s) and states:

"When you finish the prayer, no sin remains upon you unless it has been forgiven, and any need you ask for will be fulfilled."[2]

Time of Performance

According to al-Allama al-Majlisi, although some sources consider the Prayer of the Prophet (s) as one of the prayers specific to Friday, such an understanding cannot be derived from narrations. In his view, this prayer is recommended and can be performed on all days of the week, not just on Friday.[3]

Method

The Prayer of the Prophet (s) consists of two Rak'as, and Sura al-Qadr (Qur'an 97) is recited 105 times in total in each rak'a. In each of the following positions, Sura al-Qadr is recited 15 times:

  1. After reciting Sura al-Fatiha
  2. In Ruku'
  3. After Ruku' (while standing)
  4. In the first Sujud (prostration)
  5. After raising the head from the first Sujud (while sitting)
  6. In the second Sujud
  7. After raising the head from the second Sujud (while sitting)

Then, Tashahhud (testification) and Salam (salutation) are performed, followed by this supplication:

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّ‌حْمَـٰنِ الرَّ‌حِيمِ
There is no god but Allah, our Lord and the Lord of our forefathers. There is no god but Allah, the One God, and to Him we submit. لَا إِلٰهَ إِلّا اللّٰهُ رَبُّنا وَرَبُّ آبائِنَا الْأَوَّلِینَ، لَاإِلٰهَ إِلّا اللّٰهُ إِلٰهاً واحِداً وَ نَحْنُ لَهُ مُسْلِمُونَ
There is no god but Allah. We worship none but Him, with sincere devotion to Him in faith, even if the polytheists dislike it. لَاإِلٰهَ إِلّا اللّٰهُ لَانَعْبُدُ إِلّا إِیاهُ مُخْلِصِینَ لَهُ الدِّینَ وَ لَوْ کَرِهَ الْمُشْرِکُونَ
There is no god but Allah, alone, alone. He fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, strengthened His army, and defeated the confederates by Himself. لاٰ اِلـٰهَ اِلَّا اللهُ، وَحْدَهُ وَحْدَهُ [وَحْدَهُ]، اَنْجَزَ وَعْدَهُ، وَ نَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ، وَ اَعَزَّ جُنْدَهُ، وَ هَزَمَ الأَحْزٰابَ وَحْدَهُ
So to Him belongs all dominion, and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things. فَلَهُ الْمُلْکُ وَ لَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَ هُوَ عَلىٰ کُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدیرٌ
O Allah, You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them. اَللّـٰهُمَّ اَنْتَ نُورُ السَّمٰوٰاتِ وَ الْأَرْضِ وَ مَنْ فیهِنَّ
To You is all praise. You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them. To You is all praise. فَلَکَ الْحَمْدُ، وَ اَنْتَ قَیّٰامُ السَّمٰوٰاتِ وَ الْأَرْضِ وَ مَنْ فیهِنَّ
You are the Truth, Your promise is true, Your word is true, Your fulfillment is true, Paradise is true, and Hellfire is true. فَلَکَ الْحَمْدُ، وَ اَنْتَ الْحَقُّ وَ وَعْدُکَ الْحَقُّ، فَقَوْلُکَ حَقٌّ، وَ اِنْجٰازُکَ حَقٌّ، وَ الْجَنَّةُ حَقٌّ، وَ النّٰارُ حَقٌّ
O Allah, to You I have submitted, in You I have believed, upon You I have relied, by You I have contended, and to You I have turned for judgment. اَللّـٰهُمَّ لَکَ اَسْلَمْتُ، وَ بِکَ آمَنْتُ، وَ عَلَیْکَ تَوَکَّلْتُ، وَ بِکَ خٰاصَمْتُ، وَ اِلَیْکَ حٰاکَمْتُ
O my Lord, O my Lord, O my Lord. Forgive me for what I have sent ahead and what I have delayed, what I have hidden and what I have revealed. یٰا رَبِّ یٰا رَبِّ یٰا ربِّ، اِغْفِرْ لى مٰا قَدَّمْتُ وَ مٰا اَخَّرْتُ، وَ مٰا اَسْرَرْتُ وَ اَعْلَنْتُ
You are my God—there is no god but You. Send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad. اَنْتَ اِلٰهى لاٰ اِلـٰهَ اِلّٰا اَنْتَ، صَلِّ عَلىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
Forgive me, have mercy on me, and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepter of Repentance, the Most Merciful.[4] وَ اغْفِرْ لى وَ ارْحَمْنى، وَ تُبْ عَلَىَّ اِنَّکَ اَنْتَ التَّوٰابُ الرَّحیمُ
