The nineteenth supplication of al-Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādīyya (Arabic: الدعاء التاسع عشر من الصحيفة السجادية) is a supplication recited for rain after drought. In this supplication, Zayn al-'Abidin (a) points to the benefits of rain for people, features of useful rains, analogies of winds and rains as symbols of the rise of creatures on the day of resurrection, expressing gratitude for rain as a divine blessing.
This supplication is expounded thoroughly in such commentaries as Riyad al-salikin (in Arabic) by al-Sayyid 'Ali Khan al-Madani and Diyar-i ashiqan by Husayn Ansarian and Shuhud wa shinakht by Hasan Mamduhi Kirmanshahid (in Farsi).
Doctrines
The nineteenth supplication of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya is a supplication recited by Imam al-Sajjad (a) when he asked God for rains after droughts. In this supplication, the Fourth Imam points to the features of useful rains as well as the benefits of rains for people. Here are the doctrines of this supplication within seven sections[1]:
- Praying for abundant rains
- Features of useful rains
- Rains as reviving the dead earth
- Rain as putting an end to droughts
- Rain as leading to deflation of prices
- Punishment by rains
- Asking for livelihood through the blessings of the heaven and the earth
- Rain as divine mercy
- Winds and rains as symbols of the rise of creatures on the day of resurrection.[2]
Commentaries
In the commentaries of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya, such as Riyad al-salikin by Sayyid Ali Khan al-Madani,[3], Fi zilal al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya by Muhammad Jawad Mughniya,[4] Riyad al-'arifin by Muhammad b. Muhammad al-Darabi,[5] Afaq al-ruh by Muhammad Husayn Fadl Allah,[6] the nineteenth supplication is explicated. The words used in the supplication is also elucidated in lexical commentaries such as Fayd Kashani's Ta'liqat 'ala l-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya[7] and 'Izz al-Din al-Jaza'iri's Sharh al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya[8]
