The ninth supplication of al-Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādīyya (Arabic: الدعاء التاسع من الصحيفة السجادية) is a supplication transmitted from Imam al-Sajjad (a) concerning repentance from sins. In this supplication, Imam Zayn al-‘Abidin (a) asks God to help him out of dilemmas so that he can choose the right path, because one’s desirous soul chooses the wrong path. The supplications points to human weakness, asking God to close the door of sins.

This supplication is expounded thoroughly in such commentaries as Riyad al-salikin (in Arabic) by al-Sayyid 'Ali Khan al-Madani and Diyar-i ashiqan (in Farsi) by Husayn Ansarian.

Doctrines

The main theme of the ninth supplication of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya consists in asking God for enabling one to repent from sins, to do good deeds, and to abandon odious deeds. Here are the doctrines implicit in this supplication in its 7 parts:[1]

  • Asking for an opportunity for doing what satisfies God and for abandoning what enrages Him in the dilemma of choosing divine satisfaction or wrath
  • Asking for help in choosing the loss of this world in the dilemma between this-worldly loss and afterlife loss
  • Asking God for help in repentance
  • Repentance from sins being favored by God and insistence on sins being hated by God
  • The human soul choosing the wrong in the dilemma between the right and the wrong
  • The human nature is based on weakness
  • Asking God for closing the paths to sins
  • Prayer for having opportunities for doing good deeds and avoiding bad deeds.[2]

Commentaries

In the commentaries of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya, such as Fi zilal al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya by Muhammad Jawad Mughniya,[3] Riyad al-'arifin by Muhammad b. Muhammad al-Darabi,[4] Afaq al-ruh by Muhammad Husayn Fadl Allah,[5] and Riyad al-salikin by Sayyid Ali Khan al-Madani,[6] the ninth supplication is explicated. The words used in the supplication is also elucidated in lexical commentaries such as Fayd Kashani's Ta'liqat 'ala l-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya.[7]

The ninth supplication of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya is expounded in such commentaries as Diyar-i ashiqan by Husayn Ansarian,[8] Shuhud wa shinakht by Muhammad Hasan Mamduhi Kirmanshahi,[9] and Sharh wa tarjumi-yi Sahifi-yi Sajjadiyya by Sayyid Ahmad Fihri in Persian.[10]
