The thirty-seventh supplication of al-Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādīyya (Arabic: الدعاء السابع والثلاثون من الصحيفة السجادية) is a supplication transmitted from Imam al-Sajjad (a) concerning the human failure to properly thank God. In this supplication, Imam al-Sajjad (a) points out that it is impossible to thank God for His blessings in that divine blessings are matters of His grace. Moreover, God does not haste to punish wrongdoers because He hopes for their repentance and their return to the divine guidance. Zayn al-'Abidin (a) also points to God’s justice in His treatment of His servants, seeing any deviation from the divine path as arising from Satan’s deceptions.

This supplication is expounded thoroughly in such commentaries as Riyad al-salikin (in Arabic) by al-Sayyid 'Ali Khan al-Madani and Diyar-i ashiqan by Husayn Ansarian and Shuhud wa shinakht by Hasan Mamduhi Kirmanshahid (in Farsi).

Doctrines

The thirty-seventh supplication of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya is concerned with the human inability to properly thank God. In this supplication, Imam al-Sajjad (a) points to the human failure in thanking God.[1] According to Mamduhi Kirmanshahi, the position in which one sees himself as unable to thank God for His blessings is a position achieved only by pure servants of God.[2]

Here are the doctrines of the supplication:

  • The human failure to properly thank God because divine blessings are interconnected
  • The human failure to properly obey and worship God
  • Gratefulness for a blessing is superior to the blessing itself
  • The impossibility of properly thanking God for His blessings
  • The Impossibility of judging God because no one dominates God
  • God’s grace is the source of His blessings
  • God’s great reward for insignificant deeds of His servants
  • The inevitability of God’s forgiveness although His servants do not deserve it
  • The requirement of developing divine attributes in oneself in response to His blessings
  • Acknowledging divine justice in His treatment of His servants
  • Satan’s deception as the cause of deviation from the divine path
  • God’s postponement of the punishment of wrongdoers
  • God’s generous treatment of obedient and sinful servants
  • Obedience of God is owed to the divine help
  • God’s inclusive mercy for His servants
  • The reward of servants for their good deeds
  • God’s postponement of the punishment of servants in the hope of their repentance and their return to the divine guidance
  • Acknowledgement of the divine justice.[3]
