| His Supplication in Mentioning and Asking for Repentance
|
(31) وَ كَانَ مِنْ دُعَائِهِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ فِي ذِكْرِ التَّوْبَةِ وَ طَلَبِهَا
|
| In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.
|
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحيمِ
|
| 1- O God, O He whom the depiction of the describers fails to describe!
|
1. اللَّهُمَّ يَا مَنْ لَا يَصِفُهُ نَعْتُ الْوَاصِفِينَ
|
| 2- O He beyond whom passes not the hope of the hopers!
|
2. وَ يَا مَنْ لَا يُجَاوِزُهُ رَجَاءُ الرَّاجِينَ
|
| 3- O He with whom is not lost the wage of the good-doers!
|
3. وَ يَا مَنْ لَا يَضِيعُ لَدَيْهِ أَجْرُ الْمُحْسِنِينَ ،
|
| 4- O He who is the ultimate object of the fear of the worshipers!
|
4. وَ يَا مَنْ هُوَ مُنْتَهَى خَوْفِ الْعَابِدِينَ .
|
| 5- O He who is the utmost limit of the dread of the godfearing!
|
5. وَ يَا مَنْ هُوَ غَايَةُ خَشْيَةِ الْمُتَّقِينَ
|
| 6- This is the station of him whom sins have passed from hand to hand.
|
6. هَذَا مَقَامُ مَنْ تَدَاوَلَتْهُ أَيْدِي الذُّنُوبِ ،
|
| Offenses' reins have led him on,
|
وَ قَادَتْهُ أَزِمَّةُ الْخَطَايَا ،
|
| and Satan has gained mastery over him.
|
وَ اسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ ،
|
| He fell short of what Thou hast commanded through neglect
|
فَقَصَّرَ عَمَّا أَمَرْتَ بِهِ تَفْرِيطاً ،
|
| and he pursued what Thou hast prohibited in delusion,
|
وَ تَعَاطَى مَا نَهَيْتَ عَنْهُ تَغْرِيراً .
|
| 7- like one ignorant of Thy power over him
|
7. كَالْجَاهِلِ بِقُدْرَتِكَ عَلَيْهِ ،
|
| or one who denies the bounty of Thy beneficence toward him,
|
أَوْ كَالْمُنْكِرِ فَضْلَ إِحْسَانِكَ إِلَيْهِ
|
| until, when the eye of guidance was opened for him
|
حَتَّى إِذَا انْفَتَحَ لَهُ بَصَرُ الْهُدَى ،
|
| and the clouds of blindness were dispelled,
|
وَ تَقَشَّعَتْ عَنْهُ سَحَائِبُ الْعَمَى ،
|
| he reckoned that through which he had wronged himself
|
أَحْصَى مَا ظَلَمَ بِهِ نَفْسَهُ ،
|
| and reflected upon that in which he had opposed his Lord.
|
وَ فَكَّرَ فِيمَا خَالَفَ بِهِ رَبَّهُ ،
|
| He saw his vast disobedience as vast
|
فَرَأَى كَبِيرَ عِصْيَانِهِ كَبِيراً
|
| and his great opposition as great.
|
وَ جَلِيلَ مُخَالَفَتِهِ جَلِيلًا .
|
| 8- So turned to Thee, hoping in Thee
|
8. فَأَقْبَلَ نَحْوَكَ مُؤَمِّلًا لَكَ
|
| and ashamed before Thee,
|
مُسْتَحْيِياً مِنْكَ ،
|
| and he directed his beseeching toward Thee, having trust in Thee.
|
وَ وَجَّهَ رَغْبَتَهُ إِلَيْكَ ثِقَةً بِكَ ،
|
| He repaired to Thee in his longing with certitude
|
فَأَمَّكَ بِطَمَعِهِ يَقِيناً ،
|
| and he went straight to Thee in fear with sincerity.
|
وَ قَصَدَكَ بِخَوْفِهِ إِخْلَاصاً ،
|
| His longing was devoid of every object of longing but Thee,
|
قَدْ خَلَا طَمَعُهُ مِنْ كُلِّ مَطْمُوعٍ فِيهِ غَيْرِكَ ،
|
| and his fright departed from every object of fear but Thee.
|
وَ أَفْرَخَ رَوْعُهُ مِنْ كُلِّ مَحْذُورٍ مِنْهُ سِوَاكَ .
|
| 9- So he stood before Thee pleading,
|
9. فَمَثَلَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ مُتَضَرِّعاً ،
|
| his eyes turned toward the ground in humbleness,
|
وَ غَمَّضَ بَصَرَهُ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ مُتَخَشِّعاً ،
|
| his head bowed before Thy might in lowliness;
|
وَ طَأْطَأَ رَأْسَهُ لِعِزَّتِكَ مُتَذَلِّلًا ،
|
| he revealed to Thee in meekness those secrets of his which Thou knowest better than he;
|
وَ أَبَثَّكَ مِنْ سِرِّهِ مَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنْهُ خُضُوعاً ،
|
| he numbered for Thee in humility those sins of his which Thou countest better than he;
|
وَ عَدَّدَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِ مَا أَنْتَ أَحْصَى لَهَا خُشُوعاً ،
|
| he sought help from Thee
|
وَ اسْتَغَاثَ بِكَ
|
| before the dreadful into which he has fallen in Thy knowledge
|
مِنْ عَظِيمِ مَا وَقَعَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِكَ
|
| and the ugly which has disgraced him in Thy judgement:
|
وَ قَبِيحِ مَا فَضَحَهُ فِي حُكْمِكَ
|
| the sins whose pleasures have turned their backs and gone
|
مِنْ ذُنُوبٍ أَدْبَرَتْ لَذَّاتُهَا فَذَهَبَتْ ،
|
| and whose evil consequences have stayed and stuck fast.
|
وَ أَقَامَتْ تَبِعَاتُهَا فَلَزِمَتْ .
|
| 10- He will not deny Thy justice, my God,
|
10. لَا يُنْكِرُ يَا إِلَهِي عَدْلَكَ
|
| if Thou punishest him,
|
إِنْ عَاقَبْتَهُ ،
|
| nor will he consider Thy pardon great
|
وَ لَا يَسْتَعْظِمُ عَفْوَكَ
|
| if Thou pardonest him and hast mercy upon him,
|
إِنْ عَفَوْتَ عَنْهُ وَ رَحِمْتَهُ ،
|
| for Thou art the Generous Lord
|
لِأَنَّكَ الرَّبُّ الْكَرِيمُ
|
| for whom the forgiveness of great sins is nothing great!
|
الَّذِي لَا يَتَعَاظَمُهُ غُفْرَانُ الذَّنْبِ الْعَظِيمِ .
|
| 11- O God, so here I am:
|
11. اللَّهُمَّ فَهَا أَنَا ذَا
|
| I have come to Thee obeying Thy command
|
قَدْ جِئْتُكَ مُطِيعاً لِأَمْرِكَ
|
| (for Thou hast commanded supplication)
|
فِيمَا أَمَرْتَ بِهِ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ ،
|
| and asking the fulfilment of Thy promise,
|
مُتَنَجِّزاً وَعْدَكَ
|
| (for Thou hast promised to respond)
|
فِيمَا وَعَدْتَ بِهِ مِنَ الْإِجَابَةِ ،
|
| Thou hast said, Supplicate Me and I will respond to you.
|
إِذْ تَقُولُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ .
|
| 12- O God, so bless Muhammad and his Household,
|
12. اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ ،
|
| meet me with Thy forgiveness just as I have met Thee with my confession,
|
وَ الْقَنِي بِمَغْفِرَتِكَ كَمَا لَقِيتُكَ بِإِقْرَارِي ،
|
| lift me up from the fatal infirmities of sins just as I have let myself down before Thee,
|
وَ ارْفَعْنِي عَنْ مَصَارِعِ الذُّنُوبِ كَمَا وَضَعْتُ لَكَ نَفْسِي ،
|
| and cover me with Thy covering
|
وَ اسْتُرْنِي بِسِتْرِكَ
|
| just as Thou hast shown no haste to take vengeance on me!
|
كَمَا تَأَنَّيْتَنِي عَنِ الِانْتِقَامِ مِنِّي .
|
| 13- O God, make firm my intention to obey Thee,
|
13. اللَّهُمَّ وَ ثَبِّتْ فِي طَاعَتِكَ نِيَّتِي ،
|
| strengthen my insight in worshipping Thee,
|
وَ أَحْكِمْ فِي عِبَادَتِكَ بَصِيرَتِي ،
|
| give me the success of works
|
وَ وَفِّقْنِي مِنَ الْأَعْمَالِ
|
| which will wash away the defilement of offenses,
|
لِمَا تَغْسِلُ بِهِ دَنَسَ الْخَطَايَا عَنِّي ،
|
| and take me when Thou takest me in Thy creed and the creed of Thy prophet Muhammad (upon him be peace).
|
وَ تَوَفَّنِي عَلَى مِلَّتِكَ وَ مِلَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ إِذَا تَوَفَّيْتَنِي .
|
| 14- O God, I repent to Thee in this my station
|
14. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا
|
| from my sins, great and small,
|
مِنْ كَبَائِرِ ذُنُوبِي وَ صَغَائِرِهَا ،
|
| my evil deeds, inward and outward,
|
وَ بَوَاطِنِ سَيِّئَاتِي وَ ظَوَاهِرِهَا ،
|
| my lapses, past and recent,
|
وَ سَوَالِفِ زَلَّاتِي وَ حَوَادِثِهَا ،
|
| with the repentance of one who does not tell himself that he might disobey
|
تَوْبَةَ مَنْ لَا يُحَدِّثُ نَفْسَهُ بِمَعْصِيَةٍ ،
|
| or secretly think that he might return to an offense.
|
وَ لَا يُضْمِرُ أَنْ يَعُودَ فِي خَطِيئَةٍ
|
| 15- Thou hast said, my God,
|
15. وَ قَدْ قُلْتَ يَا إِلَهِي
|
| in the firm text of Thy Book,
|
فِي مُحْكَمِ كِتَابِكَ
|
| that Thou acceptest repentance from Thy servants,
|
إِنَّكَ تَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِكَ ،
|
| pardonest evil deeds,
|
وَ تَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئَاتِ ،
|
| and lovest the repenters,
|
وَ تُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِينَ ،
|
| so accept my repentance as Thou hast promised,
|
فَاقْبَلْ تَوْبَتِي كَمَا وَعَدْتَ ،
|
| pardon my evil deeds as thou hast guaranteed,
|
وَ اعْفُ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِي كَمَا ضَمِنْتَ ،
|
| and make obligatory toward me Thy love as Thou hast stipulated!
|
وَ أَوْجِبْ لِي مَحَبَّتَكَ كَمَا شَرَطْتَ
|
| 16- To Thee, my Lord, belongs my stipulation
|
16. وَ لَكَ يَا رَبِّ شَرْطِي
|
| that I will not return to what is disliked by Thee,
|
أَلَّا أَعُودَ فِي مَكْرُوهِكَ ،
|
| my guarantee that I will not go back to what Thou blamest,
|
وَ ضَمَانِي أَنْ لَا أَرْجِعَ فِي مَذْمُومِكَ ،
|
| and my covenant that I will stay away from acts of disobedience to Thee.
|
وَ عَهْدِي أَنْ أَهْجُرَ جَمِيعَ مَعَاصِيكَ .
|
| 17- O God, Thou knowest better what I have done,
|
17. اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا عَمِلْتُ
|
| so forgive me what Thou knowest
|
فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا عَلِمْتَ ،
|
| and turn me through Thy power to what Thou lovest!
|
وَ اصْرِفْنِي بِقُدْرَتِكَ إِلَى مَا أَحْبَبْتَ .
|
| 18- O God, counted against me are claims that stay in my memory
|
18. اللَّهُمَّ وَ عَلَيَّ تَبِعَاتٌ قَدْ حَفِظْتُهُنَّ ،
|
| and claims that I have forgotten,
|
وَ تَبِعَاتٌ قَدْ نَسِيتُهُنَّ ،
|
| while all of them remain in Thy eye that does not sleep
|
وَ كُلُّهُنَّ بِعَيْنِكَ الَّتِي لَا تَنَامُ ،
|
| and Thy knowledge that does not forget!
|
وَ عِلْمِكَ الَّذِي لَا يَنْسَى ،
|
| So compensate their owners, lighten their load upon me, lift up their weight from me, and preserve me from approaching their like!
|
فَعَوِّضْ مِنْهَا أَهْلَهَا ، وَ احْطُطْ عَنِّي وِزْرَهَا ، وَ خَفِّفْ عَنِّي ثِقْلَهَا ، وَ اعْصِمْنِي مِنْ أَنْ أُقَارِفَ مِثْلَهَا .
|
| 19- O God, but I can not be faithful to my repentance without Thy preservation,
|
19. اللَّهُمَّ وَ إِنَّهُ لَا وَفَاءَ لِي بِالتَّوْبَةِ إِلَّا بِعِصْمَتِكَ ،
|
| nor can I refrain from offenses without Thy strength.
|
وَ لَا اسْتِمْسَاكَ بِي عَنِ الْخَطَايَا إِلَّا عَنْ قُوَّتِكَ ،
|
| So strengthen me with a sufficient strength
|
فَقَوِّنِي بِقُوَّةٍ كَافِيَةٍ ،
|
| and attend to me with a defending preservation!
|
وَ تَوَلَّنِي بِعِصْمَةٍ مَانِعَةٍ .
|
| 20- O God, if any servant repents to Thee,
|
20. اللَّهُمَّ أَيُّمَا عَبْدٍ تَابَ إِلَيْكَ
|
| while in Thy knowledge of the Unseen he will break his repentance
|
وَ هُوَ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ فَاسِخٌ لِتَوْبَتِهِ ،
|
| and return to his sin and offense,
|
وَ عَائِدٌ فِي ذَنْبِهِ وَ خَطِيئَتِهِ ،
|
| I seek refuge in Thee lest I be like that!
|
فَإِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَكُونَ كَذَلِكَ ،
|
| So make this my repentance
|
فَاجْعَلْ تَوْبَتِي هَذِهِ
|
| a repentance after which I will need no repentance
|
تَوْبَةً لَا أَحْتَاجُ بَعْدَهَا إِلَى تَوْبَةٍ ،
|
| and a repentance which will obligate the erasing of what has gone by
|
تَوْبَةً مُوجِبَةً لِمَحْوِ مَا سَلَفَ ،
|
| and safety in what remains!
|
وَ السَّلَامَةِ فِيمَا بَقِيَ .
|
| 21- O God, I ask pardon from Thee for my ignorance,
|
21. اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْتَذِرُ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ جَهْلِي ،
|
| and I ask Thee to disregard my evil acts!
|
وَ أَسْتَوْهِبُكَ سُوءَ فِعْلِي ،
|
| So join me to the shelter of Thy mercy through graciousness
|
فَاضْمُمْنِي إِلَى كَنَفِ رَحْمَتِكَ تَطَوُّلًا ،
|
| and cover me with the covering of Thy well-being through bounteousness!
|
وَ اسْتُرْنِي بِسِتْرِ عَافِيَتِكَ تَفَضُّلًا .
|
| 22- O God, I repent to Thee from everything opposed to Thy will
|
22. اللَّهُمَّ وَ إِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ كُلِّ مَا خَالَفَ إِرَادَتَكَ ،
|
| or far from Thy love
|
أَوْ زَالَ عَنْ مَحَبَّتِكَ
|
| - the thoughts of my heart, the glances of my eye, the tales of my tongue -
|
مِنْ خَطَرَاتِ قَلْبِي ، وَ لَحَظَاتِ عَيْنِي ، وَ حِكَايَاتِ لِسَانِي ،
|
| with a repentance through which each bodily part will by itself stay safe from ill consequences with Thee
|
تَوْبَةً تَسْلَمُ بِهَا كُلُّ جَارِحَةٍ عَلَى حِيَالِهَا مِنْ تَبِعَاتِكَ ،
|
| and remain secure from Thy painful penalties
|
وَ تَأْمَنُ مِمَا يَخَافُ الْمُعْتَدُونَ
|
| feared by transgressors!
|
مِنْ أَلِيمِ سَطَوَاتِكَ .
|
| 23- O God,so have mercy on my being alone before Thee,
|
23. اللَّهُمَّ فَارْحَمْ وَحْدَتِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ ،
|
| the pounding of my heart in dread of Thee,
|
وَ وَجِيبَ قَلْبِي مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ ،
|
| the trembling of my limbs in awe of Thee!
|
وَ اضْطِرَابَ أَرْكَانِي مِنْ هَيْبَتِكَ ،
|
| My sins, my God, have stood me in the station of degradation in Thy courtyard.
|
فَقَدْ أَقَامَتْنِي يَا رَبِّ ذُنُوبِي مَقَامَ الْخِزْيِ بِفِنَائِكَ ،
|
| If I remain silent, none will speak for me;
|
فَإِنْ سَكَتُّ لَمْ يَنْطِقْ عَنِّي أَحَدٌ ،
|
| if I seek an intercessor, I am not worthy for intercession.
|
وَ إِنْ شَفَعْتُ فَلَسْتُ بِأَهْلِ الشَّفَاعَةِ .
|
| 24- O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,
|
24. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ ،
|
| make Thy generosity intercede for my offenses,
|
وَ شَفِّعْ فِي خَطَايَايَ كَرَمَكَ ،
|
| follow up my evil deeds with Thy pardon,
|
وَ عُدْ عَلَى سَيِّئَاتِي بِعَفْوِكَ ،
|
| repay me not with the punishment that is my proper repayment,
|
وَ لَا تَجْزِنِي جَزَائِي مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ ،
|
| spread over me Thy graciousness,
|
وَ ابْسُطْ عَلَيَّ طَوْلَكَ ،
|
| wrap me in Thy covering,
|
وَ جَلِّلْنِي بِسِتْرِكَ ،
|
| and do with me what is done by a mighty man,
|
وَ افْعَلْ بِي فِعْلَ عَزِيزٍ
|
| when a lowly slave pleads to him and he shows him mercy,
|
تَضَرَّعَ إِلَيْهِ عَبْدٌ ذَلِيلٌ فَرَحِمَهُ ،
|
| or a rich man, when a poor slave submits himself and he raises him to wealth!
|
أَوْ غَنِيٍّ تَعَرَّضَ لَهُ عَبْدٌ فَقِيرٌ فَنَعَشَهُ .
|
| 25- O God,I have no protector against Thee,
|
25. اللَّهُمَّ لَا خَفِيرَ لِي مِنْكَ
|
| so let Thy might be my protector!
|
فَلْيَخْفُرْنِي عِزُّكَ ،
|
| I have no intercessor with Thee,
|
وَ لَا شَفِيعَ لِي إِلَيْكَ
|
| so let Thy bounty be my intercessor!
|
فَلْيَشْفَعْ لِي فَضْلُكَ ،
|
| My offenses have set me quaking, so let Thy pardon give me security!
|
وَ قَدْ أَوْجَلَتْنِي خَطَايَايَ فَلْيُؤْمِنِّي عَفْوُكَ .
|
| 26- Not all that I have said rises up from
|
26. فَمَا كُلُّ مَا نَطَقْتُ بِهِ
|
| my ignorance of my evil footsteps
|
عَنْ جَهْلٍ مِنِّي بِسُوءِ أَثَرِي ،
|
| or forgetfulness of my blameworthy acts in the past,
|
وَ لَا نِسْيَانٍ لِمَا سَبَقَ مِنْ ذَمِيمِ فِعْلِي ،
|
| but in order that Thy heaven and those within it and Thy earth and those upon it
|
لَكِنْ لِتَسْمَعَ سَمَاؤُكَ وَ مَنْ فِيهَا وَ أَرْضُكَ وَ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا
|
| may hear the remorse which I have professed to Thee
|
مَا أَظْهَرْتُ لَكَ مِنَ النَّدَمِ ،
|
| and the repentance through which I have sought asylum with Thee.
|
وَ لَجَأْتُ إِلَيْكَ فِيهِ مِنَ التَّوْبَةِ .
|
| 27- Then perhaps one of them, through Thy mercy,
|
27. فَلَعَلَّ بَعْضَهُمْ بِرَحْمَتِكَ
|
| may show mercy upon my evil situation
|
يَرْحَمُنِي لِسُوءِ مَوْقِفِي ،
|
| or be seized by tenderness for my evil state.
|
أَوْ تُدْرِكُهُ الرِّقَّةُ عَلَيَّ لِسُوءِ حَالِي
|
