Text:Twenty-second supplication of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya

His Supplication in Hardship, Effort, and Difficult Affairs	(22) وَ كَانَ مِنْ دُعَائِهِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ عِنْدَ الشِّدَّةِ وَ الْجَهْدِ وَ تَعَسُّرِ الْأُمُورِ
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.	بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحيمِ
1- O God, Thou hast charged me concerning myself	1. اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ كَلَّفْتَنِي مِنْ نَفْسِي
with that which belongs more to Thee than to me.	مَا أَنْتَ أَمْلَكُ بِهِ مِنِّي ،
Thy power over it and over me is greater than my power,	وَ قُدْرَتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَ عَلَيَّ أَغْلَبُ مِنْ قُدْرَتِي ،
so give me in myself what will make Thee pleased with me	فَأَعْطِنِي مِنْ نَفْسِي مَا يُرْضِيكَ عَنِّي ،
and take for Thyself Thy good pleasure in my self's well-being!	وَ خُذْ لِنَفْسِكَ رِضَاهَا مِنْ نَفْسِي فِي عَافِيَةٍ .
2- O God, I have no endurance for effort,	2. اللَّهُمَّ لَا طَاقَةَ لِي بِالْجَهْدِ ،
no patience in affliction,	وَ لَا صَبْرَ لِي عَلَى الْبَلَاءِ ،
no strength to bear poverty.	وَ لَا قُوَّةَ لِي عَلَى الْفَقْرِ ،
So forbid me not my provision	فَلَا تَحْظُرْ عَلَيَّ رِزْقِي ،
and entrust me not to Thy creatures,	وَ لَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى خَلْقِكَ ،
but take care of my need alone	بَلْ تَفَرَّدْ بِحَاجَتِي ،
and Thyself attend to sufficing me!	وَ تَوَلَّ كِفَايَتِي .
3- Look upon me and look after me in all my affairs,	3. وَ انْظُرْ إِلَيَّ وَ انْظُرْ لِي فِي جَمِيعِ أُمُورِي ،
for if Thou entrustest me to myself,	فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ وَكَلْتَنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي
I will be incapable before myself and fail to undertake that in which my best interest lies.	عَجَزْتُ عَنْهَا وَ لَمْ أُقِمْ مَا فِيهِ مَصْلَحَتُهَا ،
If Thou entrustest me to Thy creatures, they will frown upon me,	وَ إِنْ وَكَلْتَنِي إِلَى خَلْقِكَ تَجَهَّمُونِي ،
and if Thou makest me resort to my kinsfolk, they will refuse to give to me;	وَ إِنْ أَلْجَأْتَنِي إِلَى قَرَابَتِي حَرَمُونِي ،
if they give, they will give little and in bad temper,	وَ إِنْ أَعْطَوْا أَعْطَوْا قَلِيلًا نَكِداً ،
making me feel long obliged	وَ مَنُّوا عَلَيَّ طَوِيلًا ،
and blaming me much.	وَ ذَمُّوا كَثِيراً .
4- So through Thy bounty, O God, free me from need,	4. فَبِفَضْلِكَ ، اللَّهُمَّ ، فَأَغْنِنِي ،
through Thy mightiness, lift me up,	وَ بِعَظَمَتِكَ فَانْعَشْنِي ،
through Thy boundless plenty, open my hand,	وَ بِسَعَتِكَ ، فَابْسُطْ يَدِي ،
and with that which is with Thee, suffice me!	وَ بِمَا عِنْدَكَ فَاكْفِنِي .
5- O God, bless Muhammad and his Household,	5. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ ،
rid me of envy,	وَ خَلِّصْنِي مِنَ الْحَسَدِ ،
encircle me against sins,	وَ احْصُرْنِي عَنِ الذُّنُوبِ ،
make me abstain from things unlawful,	وَ وَرِّعْنِي عَنِ الْمَحَارِمِ ،
give me not the boldness of disobedient acts,	وَ لَا تُجَرِّئْنِي عَلَى الْمَعَاصِي ،
assign me love for that which is with Thee	وَ اجْعَلْ هَوَايَ عِنْدَكَ ،
and satisfaction with that which comes to me from Thee,	وَ رِضَايَ فِيمَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ مِنْكَ ،
bless me in that which Thou providest me, that which Thou conferrest upon me,	وَ بَارِكْ لِي فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنِي وَ فِيمَا خَوَّلْتَنِي
and that through which Thou favourest me,	وَ فِيمَا أَنْعَمْتَ بِهِ عَلَيَّ ،
and make me in all my states safeguarded, watched,	وَ اجْعَلْنِي فِي كُلِّ حَالَاتِي مَحْفُوظاً مَكْلُوءاً
covered, defended, given refuge, and granted sanctuary!	مَسْتُوراً مَمْنُوعاً مُعَاذاً مُجَاراً .
6- O God, bless Muhammad and his Household	6. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ ،
and let me accomplish everything which Thou hast enjoined upon me	وَ اقْضِ عَنِّي كُلَّ مَا أَلْزَمْتَنِيهِ
or made obligatory for me toward Thee,	وَ فَرَضْتَهُ عَلَيَّ لَكَ
in one of the ways of Thy obedience,	فِي وَجْهٍ مِنْ وُجُوهِ طَاعَتِكَ
or toward one of Thy creatures,	أَوْ لِخَلْقٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ
though my body be too frail for that, my strength too feeble,	وَ إِنْ ضَعُفَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ بَدَنِي ، وَ وَهَنَتْ عَنْهُ قُوَّتِي ،
my power not able to reach it,	وَ لَمْ تَنَلْهُ مَقْدُرَتِي ،
and my possessions and what my hand owns not encompass it,	وَ لَمْ يَسَعْهُ مَالِي وَ لَا ذَاتُ يَدِي ،
and whether I have remembered it or forgotten it.	ذَكَرْتُهُ أَوْ نَسِيتُهُ .
7- It, my Lord, is among that which Thou hast counted against me	7. هُوَ ، يَا رَبِّ ، مِمَّا قَدْ أَحْصَيْتَهُ عَلَيَّ
while I have been heedless of it in myself.	وَ أَغْفَلْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ نَفْسِي ،
Let me perform it through Thy plentiful giving	فَأَدِّهِ عَنِّي مِنْ جَزِيلِ عَطِيَّتِكَ
and the abundance which is with Thee	وَ كَثِيرِ مَا عِنْدَكَ ،
- for Thou art Boundless, Generous –	فَإِنَّكَ وَاسِعٌ كَرِيمٌ ،
so that nothing of it may remain against me,	حَتَّى لَا يَبْقَى عَلَيَّ شَيْ‏ءٌ مِنْهُ
est Thou wouldst wish to settle accounts for it from my good deeds	تُرِيدُ أَنْ تُقَاصَّنِي بِهِ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِي ،
or to compound my evil deeds on the day I meet Thee, my Lord!	أَوْ تُضَاعِفَ بِهِ مِنْ سَيِّئَاتِي يَوْمَ أَلْقَاكَ يَا رَبِّ .
8- O God, bless Muhammad and his Household	8. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ ،
and provide me with desire to serve Thee for the sake of my state in the hereafter,	وَ ارْزُقْنِي الرَّغْبَةَ فِي الْعَمَلِ لَكَ لِآخِرَتِي
such that I know the truthfulness of that [desire] in my heart,	حَتَّى أَعْرِفَ صِدْقَ ذَلِكَ مِنْ قَلْبِي ،
be dominated by renunciation while in this world,	وَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ الْغَالِبُ عَلَيَّ الزُّهْدَ فِي دُنْيَايَ ،
do good deeds with yearning,	وَ حَتَّى أَعْمَلَ الْحَسَنَاتِ شَوْقاً ،
and remain secure from evil deeds in fright and fear!	وَ آمَنَ مِنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ فَرَقاً وَ خَوْفاً ،
And give me a light whereby I may walk among the people,	وَ هَبْ لِي نُوراً أَمْشِي بِهِ فِي النَّاسِ ،
be guided in the shadows,	وَ أَهْتَدِي بِهِ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ ،
and seek illumination in doubt and uncertainty!	وَ أَسْتَضِي‏ءُ بِهِ مِنَ الشَّكِّ وَ الشُّبُهَاتِ .
9- O God, bless Muhammad and his Household	9. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ ،
and provide me with fear of the threatened gloom	وَ ارْزُقْنِي خَوْفَ غَمِّ الْوَعِيدِ ،
and yearning for the promised reward,	وَ شَوْقَ ثَوَابِ الْمَوْعُودِ
such that I may find the pleasure of that for which I supplicate Thee	حَتَّى أَجِدَ لَذَّةَ مَا أَدْعُوكَ لَهُ ،
and the sorrow of that from which I seek sanctuary in Thee!	وَ كَأْبَةَ مَا أَسْتَجِيرُ بِكَ مِنْهُ .
10- O God, Thou knowest what will set my affairs right	10. اللَّهُمَّ قَدْ تَعْلَمُ مَا يُصْلِحُنِي
in this world and the next,	مِنْ أَمْرِ دُنْيَايَ وَ آخِرَتِي
so be ever gracious toward my needs!	فَكُنْ بِحَوَائِجِي حَفِيّاً .
11- O God, bless Muhammad and Muhammad's Household	11. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ،
and provide me with what is Thy right when I fall short	وَ ارْزُقْنِي الْحَقَّ عِنْدَ تَقْصِيرِي
in thanking Thee	فِي الشُّكْرِ لَكَ
for that through which Thou hast favoured me in ease and difficulty,	بِمَا أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ فِي الْيُسْرِ وَ الْعُسْرِ
health and sickness,	وَ الصِّحَّةِ وَ السَّقَمِ ،
such that I may come to know in myself	حَتَّى أَتَعَرَّفَ مِنْ نَفْسِي
repose in satisfaction and serenity of soul	رَوْحَ الرِّضَا وَ طُمَأْنِينَةَ النَّفْسِ مِنِّي
in that which Thou hast made incumbent upon me	بِمَا يَجِبُ لَكَ
in whatever states may occur: fear and security,	فِيمَا يَحْدُثُ فِي حَالِ الْخَوْفِ وَ الْأَمْنِ
satisfaction and displeasure,	وَ الرِّضَا وَ السُّخْطِ
loss and gain!	وَ الضَّرِّ وَ النَّفْعِ .
12- O God, bless Muhammad and his Household	12. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ ،
and provide me with a breast safe from envy,	وَ ارْزُقْنِي سَلَامَةَ الصَّدْرِ مِنَ الْحَسَدِ
such that I envy none of Thy creatures	حَتَّى لَا أَحْسُدَ أَحَداً مِنْ خَلْقِكَ
and in anything of Thy bounty	عَلَى شَيْ‏ءٍ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ ،
and such that I see none of Thy favours	وَ حَتَّى لَا أَرَى نِعْمَةً مِنْ نِعَمِكَ
toward any of Thy creatures	عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ
in religion or this world, well-being or reverential fear, plenty or ease,	فِي دِينٍ أَوْ دُنْيَا أَوْ عَافِيَةٍ أَوْ تَقْوَى أَوْ سَعَةٍ أَوْ رَخَاءٍ
without hoping for myself better than it	إِلَّا رَجَوْتُ لِنَفْسِي أَفْضَلَ ذَلِكَ
through and from Thee alone, who hast no associate!	بِكَ وَ مِنْكَ وَحْدَكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ .
13- O God, bless Muhammad and his Household	13. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ ،
and provide me with caution against offenses and wariness against slips	وَ ارْزُقْنِی التَّحَفُّظَ مِنَ الْخَطَایا، وَ الِاحْتِرَاسَ مِنَ الزَّلَلِ
in this world and the next	فِی الدُّنْیا وَ الْآخِرَةِ
in the state of satisfaction and wrath,	فِي حَالِ الرِّضَا وَ الْغَضَبِ ،
such that I may remain indifferent toward that which enters upon me from the two states	حَتَّى أَكُونَ بِمَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ مِنْهُمَا بِمَنْزِلَةٍ سَوَاءٍ ،
work toward Thy obedience,	عَامِلًا بِطَاعَتِكَ ،
and prefer it and Thy good pleasure over all else	مُؤْثِراً لِرِضَاک عَلَی مَا سِوَاهُمَا
in both friends and enemies.	فِي الْأَوْلِيَاءِ وَ الْأَعْدَاءِ ،
Then my enemy may stay secure from my wrongdoing and injustice	حَتَّى يَأْمَنَ عَدُوِّي مِنْ ظُلْمِي وَ جَوْرِي ،
and my friend may despair of my inclination and the bent of my affection.	وَ يَيْأَسَ وَلِيِّي مِنْ مَيْلِي وَ انْحِطَاطِ هَوَايَ
14- Make me one of those who supplicate Thee with sincerity in ease	14. وَ اجْعَلْنِي مِمَّنْ يَدْعُوكَ مُخْلِصاً فِي الرَّخَاءِ
with the supplication of those who supplicate Thee with sincerity in distress!	دُعَاءَ الْمُخْلِصِينَ الْمُضْطَرِّينَ لَكَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ ،
Verily Thou art Praiseworthy, Glorious.	إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
