ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAqīl b. Abī Ṭālib (Arabic: عبدالله بن عقیل بن أبي طالب) (d. 61/680) was a martyr from the Banu Hashim tribe who died at the Battle of Karbala. His title was ʿAbd Allāh al-Akbar (عبدالله الأکبر). Ziyarah al-Shuhada, Ansab al-ashraf by al-Baladhuri, Tarikh al-Tabari, Maqatil al-talibiyyin, Muruj al-dhahab, Maqtal al-Husayn by al-Khwarazmi, and Manaqib al Abi Talib all list 'Abd Allah b. 'Aqil as a martyr of the Battle of Karbala.

Lineage

'Aqil had two children named 'Abd Allah: 'Abd Allah al-Akbar (the older) and 'Abd Allah al-Asghar (the younger).[1] Some sources stated that both of his sons were martyred in the Battle of Karbala.[2] The name of his mother is stated Umm al-Banin al-Kilabiyya, and some stated as Umm Anis.[3] Some sources stated that Abu Sa'id was the kunya of 'Abd Allah as they regarded him the father of Muhammad b. Abi Sa'id b. 'Aqil who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala.[4] However, according to genealogy books, 'Aqil had a son other than 'Abd Allah called Abu Sa'id.[5]

'Abd Allah married Maymuna the daughter of Ali b. Abi Talib (a).[6]

The name of 'Abd Allah b. 'Aqil is mentioned among the Martyrs of the Battle of Karbala in Ziyarah al-Shuhada, Ansab al-Ashraf by al-Baladhuri, Tarikh al-Tabari, Maqatil al-talibi'in, Murawwij al-dhahab, Maqtal al-Husayn by al-Kharizmi and Manaqib al Abi Talib and so on.[7]

Martyrdom

It is said 'Abd Allah b. Khalid al-Juhani from Hamdan tribe was probably the murderer of 'Abd Allah b. 'Aqil.[8] However according to another source 'Amr b. Subayh al-Saydawi (or Sada'i) was the murderer of 'Abd Allah in the battle of Karbala.[9]

Based on a research by Muhammad Mahdi Shams al-Din in his book Ansar al-Husayn, Abu 'Abd Allah b. Muslim b. 'Aqil in Ziyarah Shuhada is actually 'Abd Allah b. 'Aqil.[10]
